MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Montoursville goal keeper Abby Strassner tries to pounce on the ball but comes up short on a goal by Maeve Ficks (6) of Milton.
Milton was routinely in Montoursville’s third of the field applying pressure with each possession. The shots were there, but it seemed like Montoursville’s back line and goalie Raigan Fredericks were coming up with key saves when needed in the second half.
But Milton stayed patient and sure enough, with 95 seconds to play in overtime, that goal finally went to the Black Panthers.
Sammy Roarty got to just outside of the 18 yard box and sent a shot to the far-left post past the reach of Fredericks for the game-winning goal to win a thriller at McCall Middle School on Monday afternoon, 2-1.
“I mean we think that’s what it was going to come down to with the way that game was going, it was very back and forth,” Milton assistant coach Patrick McCarthy said. “Montoursville has a really good team. They were working really hard out there just like we were. It was going to take something to go our way positively and that’s what happened.”
As the game went into overtime, McCarthy talked to his team before the extra period begin about what the team needed to do.

“We talked about it at the break that any little opportunity you get, any 50% chance you get, you have to take it and that’s what Sam did,” McCarthy said.
Montoursville made things difficult for Milton’s forwards and midfielders. While the Black Panthers had possession for majority of the game and won numerous 50/50 balls, Montoursville’s back line did well limiting where Milton was able to fire shots off from.
In the second half, Milton recorded 10 shots — six on goal — and just three came from inside of the 18. One of which came via a corner kick set piece.
“We’re young, we don’t have a lot of experience on our back line and we’re still finding our way. We’re happy with the effort, we’d have liked to get the win today, but it dind’t happen,” Montoursville coach Vic Gorini said. “We don’t have a whole lot of experience on the field right now. A lot of kids are new to the varsity level. It’s still early in the season so we hope to keep building throughout the year.”
Montoursville scored first with 32:19 to play in the first half. Khaya Bennett found Adele Dunkleberger to her left and Dunkleberger put in a shot to the far-right post for a quick 1-0 lead.

But just as fast as Montoursville score to go ahead, Milton answered.
Just 48 seconds later, Maeve Ficks was near the goal and took a pass from Roarty and sent it in for a quick game-tying goal which shifted momentum away from the Warriors early at home.
“Oh yeah, absolutely (it shifted momentum). You really have to focus after you score a goal and we had a let down there unfortunately and they got right back even with us,” Gorini said. “We’d have liked to play a goal up for awhile because that really changes the dynamics of a game, didn’t happen today but we’re going to keep working on it.”
Both teams had chances to go ahead in the second half, but neither were able to find the back of the net.
With 27:20 to play, Kenna Benentt took a direct kick from 30 yards out that she sent high which dropped nicely, but Milton keeper Sienna Short knocked it down and fell on top of it.

It was one of Montoursville’s best chances to score as the Warriors were limited to just three shots on goal, and it was the only shot on goal from Montoursville in either the second half or overtime.
With 8:56 to play in the game, Montoursville’s Khaya Bennett got the ball from 10 yards out and had a good look at the goal, but sent it just wide to the left.
Roarty almost scored with 25:39 to play when she was in position for a corner kick and sent a great header in, only for Fredericks to make an athletic grab above her head and keep it from slipping past her.
Milton ended the game with a 14-3 shots on goal edge against the Warriors and, in total, the Black Panthers fired 20 shots.
“That’s something we really strive to do, we want to set the tone and make the other team react to what we’re doing and not the other way around,” McCarthy said. “That’s something we preach and talk a lot about. The girs did a great job of that right from the get go.”

Ficks almost put the game away a minute into overtime when she got the ball outside of the 18 and rifled a shot to the near post that hit off the post and bounced away, inches from being a game winner.
