On Tuesday afternoon, the Jersey Shore girls tennis team played host to Heartland-I foe Williamsport, with the competitive match being complemented by great weather. In a back-and-forth thriller, the Bulldogs would ultimately earn the edge, defeating the Millionaires by a score of 3-2.
In a match where every win mattered, it was No. 2 doubles duo Rylee Allison and Kamryn Kowalski that pulled out the clutch, match-sealing point. With their opponents – Gianna Virko and Caroline Pelly, forcing a second-set tiebreaker and threatening to turn the tide, the Bulldog pairing prevailed, winning that tiebreaker set, 7-3, to win in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
Apart from the duo, Jersey Shore’s No. 1 and 2 singles players – Josie Gerst and Julia Herman, won in dominant fashion to secure the win. Herman posted a clean sweep, winning 12 straight games against Williamsport’s Gabriella McQuillen. And on Gerst’s side, she posted a gentleman’s sweep, dropping just one game in the first set before winning the rest and earning a 6-1, 6-0 win.
For Williamsport, No. 3 singles player Lilly Judge and No. 1 doubles duo Peyton Kelly and Maddy Lundy were able to make things interesting, posting dominant wins of their own to give the team a shot.
Judge won her first six games to sweep the first set against Shore’s Molly Dalton before winning the second set in nine games. And Kelly and Lundy posted a similar victory, dropping two games in the first before sweeping the second.
