Warriors still chasing first win of the season

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Lycoming's Terrence Oliver outruns TCNJ's Justin Gooden during a college football game at David Person Field on Saturday.

First, Lycoming suffered a tough season-opening loss to The College of New Jersey two weeks ago when TCNJ converted a huge first down in the final minute to seal the game and run out the clock.

Last week, Lycoming fumbled a redbone possession in the final minutes as Montclair State earned a win at home against the Warriors.

Both games the Warriors lost, 27-24. Lycoming is hoping to erase those misfortunes and secure its first win of the season as Lycoming hosts Dickinson for a 1 p.m. kickoff today at David Person Field at Girardi Stadium.

Lycoming saw Joe Lyons go 9 for 14 for 92 passing yards and on the ground, Terrence Oliver again had a solid performance as he ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, averaging 6.0 yards per carry.

However, like in the Week 1 loss, Lycoming’s defense struggled to fully contain the run. After allowing more than 250 rushing yards against TCNJ, Lycoming gave up 242 last week as Luke Henrich ran for 105 on 16 carries, Diante Wilson ran for 102 on 15 and Christopher Arnold ran for 70 on 14 as each back averaged 5.0 or better on the ground.

Defensively, the Warriors and coach Mike Clark know they have to tighten up the run defense as the season progresses.

Karson Kline emerged as a standout receiving threat last week with seven exceptions for 102 yards.

Defensively, Daniel Atsou led Lycoming with 12 tackles and had a team-high two for loss. Louie Shank and Matt Trolinger each had nine tackles and Central Mountain graduate Ryan Pentz, JayVon Story and Braden Baum recorded six apiece.

Lycoming didn’t have any interceptions or sacks on defense.

Dickinson is 1-1 after a 52-19 rout of Waynesburg University last week. Dickinson fell to No. 21 Randolph-Macon College in their opener, 48-34.

Dickinson’s success has largely come from its passing attack and the arm of Ben Klessen. The sophomore has gone 25 for 46 for 438 yards and seven touchdowns through two games and is averaging 219 per game through the air. He also has a number of weapons to throw to as 11 receivers have caught a reception with nine of them reeling in two or more. Kellen Boyer has a team-high eight catches for 142 and three touchdowns and will be a focal point of Lycoming’s secondary entering Saturday.

Kessen Campbell leads Dickinson’s ground game with just 81 rushing yards, averaging just 40.5 per game while Cedric Benning III has 60 (30 per game).

Dickinson’s defense has done well pressuring quarterbacks and forcing turnovers. Dickinson has recorded four interceptions, one fumble recovery and has recorded a sack. In addition, Domani White has a team-high three tackles for loss and Valdemar Enghave has 20 tackles while Joaquin Acuna has 12 and White has 10.

Starting at $2.99/week.
