Being brothers, Montoursville’s Bryce and Quinn Winslow know how to assist one another on the field. They work in great unison with one another to get balls to the other’s feet, and often use their speed — which is on full display during the track and field season — to get past defenders.
So with 2 minutes, 12 seconds before the half, that brotherly dynamic showed once again.
Bryce Winslow fed a ball to Quinn Winslow, who got inside of the 18 and from 10 yards out rifled a great shot to the far-right post past the fingertips of keeper Zander Goudreau.
The goal gave Montoursville a two-goal lead heading into the break and was big for a boost coming into the second half. The Seals did battle in the second half to score a goal, but Montoursville played well defensively to prevent a rally and held on for an exciting 2-1 win at Memorial Stadium on Saturday morning.
The Seals came out in the second half and pressed immediately, hoping to put in a goal to capitalize on some momentum. It took a little time, but 13 minutes into the second half it happened and Bobby Kruskie scored off an assist from Quinn Hunt by scoring inside of the 6-yard box.

“We had a sense that would happen especially being down 2-0, we’ve been in that spot before too where you just come out for 10 minutes and look to throw everything at it to put a goal in. We knew that’s what they’d do,” Montoursville coach Bryan Pauling said. “We felt if we could hold there and keep it a one- or two-goal lead that we could maintain the game in second part of that second half. A really good change by their coach to add a to more pressure to tie it up there at the end.”
Selinsgrove had chances in both halves, but pressed and were more aggressive throughout the final 40 minutes to attempt to put in an equalizer.
“It was definitely a surprise for us, we didn’t expect them to throw that many numbers forward,” Quinn Winslow said. “We had to change our formation a little bit and bring more people back to the defense just to make sure they couldn’t move the ball back through us as much.”
The Warriors played well though in the final 27 minutes of the game to not let another goal slip by as Mason Fry recorded six saves, majority of those coming in the second half.
With 19:46 to play in the game, Selinsgrove’s Ryan Toskey fired a direct kick from 35 yards out that had a good chance, but sailed just wide. And with 2:49 to play, Selinsgrove’s best chance to tie the game happened when the Seals had a ball inside of the 18 off a corner kick just outside the 6-yard box. But the header sailed just wide over the crossbar by two feet and narrowly missed tying the game up late.

Montoursville had its chances as well in the second half to extend the lead.
Bryce Winslow had a 1-v-1 look inside the 18 from 12 yards out with 14:13 to play and let go a nice shot, but Goudreau came up with a great diving stop to prevent a would-be goal and a 3-1 lead.
“With an average keeper maybe in there, we get a couple more in today. So when you have a really solid D and a really solid keeper as an opponent, any one you can get in is important,” Pauling said.
Montoursville’s first goal came roughly halfway through the first half. Quinn Winslow fed a great pass to Bryce Winslow and the junior found got a breakaway and ended up with a 1-v-1 look. That’s when Bryce Winslow fired a shot from 15 yards out to the right past Goudreau into the next for the 1-0 lead. The duo then connected again before the half to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
“Going in 2-0 gave us a little bit of a thought of how to start strategy of second half vs. being a 1-0 lead,” Pauling said.

The Seals out-shot Montoursville, 12-9, with a lot of those shots coming in the second half. Mason Fry ended the night in goal for Montoursville with six saves and played well keeping the Seals at bay despite them being hungry for a second goal throughout the second half.
“He’s easily having his best season of his soccer career. He has grown so much, so much more of a leader on the field. A lot of talking on the back, major saves, really being ready and making good decisions on when to go for ball, when to come out for ball,” Pauling said of his keeper. “A lot of conversation with defensive players of what he sees happening. A lot of these teams do diagonal runs and do all kind of different stuff to mix you up on D and he’s like a general there telling you what to do and make sure our guys adjust to it. He’s been a huge piece of the success for us this year.”
In the first half, Montoursville had a chance to score less than five minutes into the game when Colton Beadle got a chance on a breakaway and got to 10 yards out and attempted a shot only to see Goudreau slide and block it.
With 4:17 left in the game, Quinn Winslow had a direct kick 38 yards out and sent it inside of the 18. It landed at the foot of Gian Carmine who had a chance but the shot went right to the keeper on a good look.
