Abreau is a points leader for National Open championship series

PHOTO PROVIDED Rico Abreau is a points leader for the championship series of the National Open.

It was a Sunday for the record books when the High Limit Racing group made a stop in Spring Run to race at Path Valley Speedway and Tanner Thorson is now a two-time winner in the High Limit series. It took him 84 attempts to get that first win at Lernerville Speedway, but just two weeks to pick up another win when he came from his fifth-place starting spot to pass Brad Sweet on lap 20 and Giovanni Scelzi on lap 22 when he took the lead for good.

He was able to hold off Brady Bacon to cross the finish with a 0.933 second lead.

Bacon came home second followed by Scelzi with the best Posse member Danny Dietrich in fourth, Ashton Torgerson, Brad Sweet, Chase Dietz, Hunter Schuerenberg, Justin Peck, and Brenham Crouch rounding out the top 10.

With only five races remaining on their schedule it’s now really tightened up the championship with the points leader Rico Abreu and Aaron Reutzel needing to use provisionals while Brad Sweet had the pole.

The series will be idle this week for the National Open before moving west to Lakeside Speedway, Lucas Oil Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway.

Lincoln Speedway rained out Saturday night, the only other action was at Williams Grove Speedway where Brent Marks of Myerstown made a $6,000 pass when he got around Freddie Rahmer and drove to the win in the National Open tune-up for 410 sprint cars on Friday night. It was the 21st win of Marks’ career at the historic oval and his first there since winning the National Open itself in 2023.

Rahmer and Marks shared the front row for the start of the 25-lap tune up and Marks one-upped Rahmer on the initial start and ducked low into the lead in the second turn, when a caution for stopped fourth-starter Daison Pursley negated the move and the ensuing restart saw Rahmer get the upper hand.

It was brief when the early pace was soon slowed again on lap three, giving Marks a clear shot at the leader, and by lap nine Rahmer’s advantage was still less than a second. Marks closed the gap as Rahmer got bottled up behind a batch of battling cars on lap 13 when Marks charged by him. Rahmer refused to let Marks get away as the pair darted through traffic, eventually giving Marks a bit of comfort before crossing the line 1.668 seconds ahead of Rahmer. Brock Zearfoss rode home third followed by Cameron Smith and Troy Wagaman Jr.

Wagaman won the 2025 Hoosier Diamond Series title after his run in the main event.

In the 358 sprint main event it was newly crowned track champion Dylan Norris of Hanover claiming his fifth oval win of the year in the division.

The 63rd National Open on Saturday has a $75,000 payday. The preliminary race will celebrate its 39th running.

Starting at $2.99/week.
