Berwick remains undefeated with 63-19 win against Williamsport
BERWICK-In yet another display of dominating football, Berwick continues to run roughshod over its competition. The Bulldogs used a simple, but very familiar blueprint to take another important step towards securing an undefeated regular season. Ty’Meere Wilkerson broke his own single-game rushing record by racking up 390 yards and five touchdowns, as Berwick overwhelmed Williamsport in a 63-19 win.
“Credit to our offensive line,” Berwick coach C.J. Curry said. “Credit to our tight ends and our fullbacks. Ty knew after this game last year and watching them on film, teams have had success running the football against them. So we weren’t going to change who we are. We knew we’d probably get 10 or 11 (guys) in the box, and our guys did a great job sorting it out and just let him go get it. I’m super proud of our guys.”
Wilkerson rushed for 366 yards against Williamsport in 2024, which at the time was a school record, and he outdid himself on Friday night. He needed just three touches to break off the first of many long runs. His initial touchdown came on a toss to the left which resulted in a 47-yard touchdown just over a minute into the game. Gabe Decker blocked a punt on the next Williamsport possession, and was rewarded when his only carry of the night went for a 14-yard touchdown. Caleb May, who chipped in nicely with 44 yards on four carries, scored from 12 yards out to give the Bulldogs a 21-0 lead with 1:28 left in the first quarter.
“Caleb May stepping up at running back tonight,” Curry said. “He’s just a senior who is a workhorse who can give you something. I don’t know how many rush yards we ended with, but is was probably dang close to 500, which is awesome. Our guys have bought into what we’re trying to do, bought into our culture of pride, commitment, and mental and physical toughness.”
Berwick (8-0) actually rushed for 517 yards, and Wilkerson put up numbers that would make any video game player jealous. Wilkerson broke loose on a 65-yard sprint to paydirt that quickly answered a Williamsport touchdown run by quarterback Tevin Williams, and Wilkerson approached the 300-yard mark late in the first half thanks to a 60-yard house call with 3:10 left before halftime.
“Ty is fantastic, and I know everybody knows that,” Williamsport coach Mike Pearson said. “But, also the work and the commitment that the Berwick kids have put in with C.J. in that weight room. His lineman, I want to make sure those kids get the respect that they deserve. They’re tough. They’re really, really tough. I’m proud of the way our kids played in the first half, but that type of physicality wore us down. We don’t match up well with that, but I know our kids absolutely gave their very best effort.”
Williamsport (4-4) trailed 35-10, but the Millionaires made a push to keep the game somewhat competitive entering halftime. Trey Damschorder hauled in a 16-yard touchdown pass from Williams, and Giovanni White returned a fumble deep into Berwick territory. Brayden Ungard kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to pull Williamsport within 35-19. Williams finished with 99 yards rushing on 15 carries, and tallied 116 yards in the air before leaving the game early in the second half with an apparent ankle injury.
“You can hear and see his competitiveness down on the field,” Pearson said of Williams. “He wants to win. He wants to be successful. That was really fun to watch Tevin play in a big game down here in this atmosphere. I thought he made some fantastic plays. I hope he heals up and is good to go very soon.”
Any comeback hopes Williamsport had were quickly extinguished after halftime. The Bulldogs forced a quick three-and-out on defense, and Berwick ran only two plays to once again find the end zone. Quarterback Brady Cleaver faked a handoff to Wilkerson, and kept it himself on a well-executed 35-yard touchdown run. A bad snap on a punt gave Berwick outstanding field position. Wilkerson quickly cashed that miscue into points, as he took off on a 32-yard run to the end zone. It was obvious the halftime message from Curry was well-received.
“You can’t get complacent with what we’ve done,” Curry said. “We let them get the momentum, but we knew with all of our training, and all of our hard work, we needed to come out, step on their throats in the second half and just be a dominant second-half team like we’ve been doing. We knew that we had to make a couple adjustments, keep believing in ourselves.”
The Bulldogs scored four times in the third quarter. Wilkerson capped off huge night in style by closing it out with a 45-yard touchdown run on his final touch of the night. The 2,000-yard milestone is clearly in sight for the senior running back. Wilkerson has rushed for 1,895 yards and 26 touchdowns. Games against Selinsgrove and Tunkhannock, two teams having down years, remain on the schedule to close out the regular season.
“Our goal is to go 1-0,” Curry said. “The job is not finished. Every single week, we’ve got to go 1-0 and the job is never finished. We want our first Wyoming Valley Conference title since 2017, our first district championship since 2013, and we’re looking to win the state championship for the first time since 1997, so we have a long way to go.”
