Central Mountain and Williamsport show positives in close tennis match
Lucy Walker, Lane Walker and Kassie Williams won singles matches, helping Central Mountain edge Williamsport, 3-2. Williamsport took the doubles matches as Peyton Kelley and Maddy Lundy won in three sets, taking the third one, 6-4 in No. 1 doubles. Ginna Vitko and Naomi Lee won in straight sets at No. 2 doubles.
Hughesville’s tennis team continued its strong year, sweeping all five matches and defeating North Penn-Liberty, 5-0. The Spartans improved to 15-2 this season.
Elsa Kehrer won a convincing match at No. 1 singles in straight sets, winning, 6-1, 6-2 in Montoursville’s 4-1 loss against Shikellamy.
Parker Jackson scored a goal in the 27th minute, helping North Penn-Liberty defeat Troy, 1-0. Deakon Valentine made eight saves in goal for the Mounties.
Carson Harris scored the game’s first goal and Dylan Webb made 10 saves, but Sullivan County scored on a penalty kick in double overtime as the Griffins rallied past South Williamsport, 2-1.
Kenna and Khaya each logged two first-half goals, as Montoursville girls soccer got out to a 5-0 lead by break and never looked back on its way to a 7-0 win over Mount Carmel. Alongside the Bennett sisters, Faith Berwanger, Marleigh Bainbridge and Adele Bunkleberger got in on the scoring action for the Warriors, as the team finished with 31 shots through the dominant win.
Despite a strong effort from Jadyn Dunlap in goal and a plethora of scoring opportunities, the Wellsboro girls soccer fell just short of victory against a strong Athens squad, falling 1-0 in a defensive duel. The lone goal came late in the first, when Athens’ Delanie Patton knocked in a penalty kick. Dunlap finished with a game-high ten saves.
Lauren Kosek led all runners on Tuesday with a time of 21:08.00, as the Wellsboro girls finished first with a team score of 43 in a quad meet against Cowanesque Valley (48), Northeast Bradford (54) and North Penn-Mansfield (68). Kaci Kosek took eighth with a 24:07, as the Green Hornets finished with six runners in the top 15.
For North Penn-Mansfield, Jaci Fairchild placed second, finishing just one second after Kosek, and Carolyn Cherwinski took ninth with a 25:00. Maddison Fay led the way for Cowanesque Valley, taking fourth with a 22:08. Two of her teammates, Lainey Hackett and Natalie Yonker, placed sixth and seventh respectively to give the team a boost.
•On the boys’ side, Northeast Bradford dominated with a team score of 22, with North Penn-Mansfield (44), Wellsboro (74) and Cowanesque Valley (85) following.
James Knefley of NPM led all runners with a time of 17:33, with teammates Braden VanLoon and Mason Forer cracking the top ten with seventh and ninth-place placements. Hunter Simonds led Cowanesque Valley, running a 19:00 to take sixth. And Henry Whitney and Max Macias led Wellsboro, taking 11th and 12th respectively with times of 20:22 and 20:23.
Lycoming’s field hockey team produced its fourth straight win and third consecutive shutout, blanking Kings College, 3-0. This is the team’s longest winning streak since the program restarted in 2022.Tayah Bower, Lacy Eckhard and Laurel Fite scored the goals for Lycoming as it improved to 6-2.
The Lycoming volleyball continued its strong play, winning its fifth match in a row with a 3-0 win against Keystone. The Warriors won the three sets, 25-12, 25-16 and 25-16. The Warriors have lost just two sets during their five-game winning streak, their longest since 2023.
Slippery Rock scored a goal in the 50th minute to edge Lock Haven, 1-0. Ethan Beck had a game-high eight saves in goal for Lock Haven.
A thrilling comeback at No. 1 doubles, plus a pair of double bagels in singles action, were instrumental as the Lycoming College men’s tennis team picked up their second straight victory, 6-1, over Thiel College on Wednesday.
• Lycoming (2-2) started the day by sweeping doubles play over Thiel (0-1), with sophomores Kayvan Shams – a South Williamsport graduate – and Logan Hammond – a Loyalsock graduate – winning their match, 6-2. Senior Josh Niedert and first year Josh Myers – a Hughesville graduate – fell behind by three games but rallied back for a 7-5 victory.
In singles action, Myers won the longest and most thrilling match of the afternoon, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) in the No. 2 match, while Shams swept at No. 3 singles 7-5, 6-0. The final two singles matches were both one-sided, with senior Luke Taylor winning No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-0 and Hammond doing the same in No. 5 singles.
Having now won consecutive matches for the first time since Sept. 19 and 30, 2023, the Warriors will search for a three-match winning streak on Thursday at home against the University of Scranton in Landmark Conference play. The match will begin at 3 p.m. at the Brandon Park Tennis Courts.
The Lycoming College volleyball team won their fifth match in a row with a 25-12, 25-16, 25-16 sweep of Keystone College on Wednesday at the Gambel Athletic Center. Lycoming (9-6) cruised against Keystone (1-14) in their final tune-up before conference play, never trailing at any point during the match.
The Warriors have lost only two total sets during their current five-match winning streak, their longest streak since an eight-game run from Sept. 4-26, 2023. Against Keystone, the Warriors played a clean, efficient match with only six attack errors, hitting a robust .439, while Keystone hit -.094.
Lycoming was led by first year Emi Wenger, who tallied a team-high 11 kills and posted a .625 hitting percentage. No other player had more than four kills, but first year Kamryn Skieth tallied four kills, four aces, and nine assists, junior Alli Macensky added four aces of her own, while first year Addison Morgan led the squad with 12 assists and sophomore Jadea Toth posted a team-high seven digs to go along with two aces and two assists.
The Lock Haven men’s soccer team opened its 2025 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division schedule by traveling to Slippery Rock on Wednesday afternoon. The Bald Eagles took The Rock to the Wire, before falling 1-0. The Rock scored the game-winning goal in the 50th minute and posted a shutout to secure the victory.
The Haven defense was strong from start to finish and allowed just one goal despite The Rock leading the contest in shots, 12-6. Bald Eagle keeper Ethan Beck finished with a game-high eight saves in 90 minutes.
