District 2-4 Class 6A playoffs: Scranton at Williamsport

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport's Giovanni White (12) beats Shamokin's Colin Steinhart (1) to the side-line in the first quarter.
Previous result: Scranton defeated Williamsport, 27-8 in Week 6 of 2019
Scranton PPG–18.2, PPA–33.6; YPG–215.5
Scranton notes: Scranton (2-8) has lost six straight games but has a shot at turning things around in a big way if it can reach the district championship. The Knights scored 96 points in their two wins but have been unable to crack 20 since their 51-6 win against West Scranton in Week 4. Quarterback Brody Coyle went over 1,100 yards last season and returned from an injury which kept him out for three weeks last Friday against Delaware Valley. He made a strong return, too, completing 10 of 17 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns. Ben Campbell caught four of those passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Coyle has run for 187 yards and four touchdowns, while Reece Whitman has run for 245 yards and five scores. He had a big day in a 45-7 win against Wyoming Valley West, running for 128 yards and four touchdowns. Coyle carried 16 times against West Scranton and scored twice.
Scranton Player to watch–Kamani Sterling: A versatile threat, Sterling leads the team with 19 catches for 264 yards and a touchdown. He also likely will get some carries, producing 174 yards and two touchdowns on 34 attempts.
Williamsport PPG–24.4, PPA–34.7; YPG–282.8, YPA–396.2
Williamsport notes: Williamsport (5-5) is trying to win its second straight district championship and defeated top-seeded Wilkes-Barre, 28-21 a week ago. That snapped a four-game losing streak which included three straight games against undefeated teams. Quarterback Tevin Williams had a big game as did wide receiver Trey Damschroder. Giovanni White totaled more than 100 yards and Lucas Naughton and Kason Ulmer both caught touchdowns. Despite missing a game, Williams has totaled 1,962 yards and 24 touchdowns after working as a wide receiver in the offseason. White has totaled 872 yards and has performed well as both a rusher and receiver. He also helps spark the team on special teams and defense and returned a punt 73 yards for a score at Valley West. Damschroder has three 100-yard receiving games and five receivers have more than 100 yards with at least one touchdown. Naughton and fellow linebacker Anthony Manley have missed games because of injuries but both are having strong years again, averaging more than 10 tackles per game for a second straight year. Manley had a big game at Wilkes-Barre, going for 13 tackles, a sack and four tackles for loss. Davahjei Dymeck also had a sack and the sophomore has averaged 9.4 tackles per game in his first year starting. Brayden Ungard is playing football for the first time and has kicked four field goals, while catching 19 passes and averaging 4.9 tackles per game.
Williamsport Player to watch–Cordoza Minor: The junior defensive end was all over the field against Wilkes-Barre and made six tackles for loss, while adding a sack. Six of Minor’s eight tackles were in the backfield and the two-way, three-year starting lineman also blocked a punt a week ago.
Winner plays: Hazleton or Wilkes-Barre
Outlook: Both teams are battle-tested and have played a lot of strong teams, so their records may be deceiving. Williamsport built momentum last week, but can ill-afford a letdown against a hungry opponent tonight.
