District 4 Class AA playoffs: Cowanesque Valley at Southern Columbia
Previous result: Have not played
CV PPG–28.5, PPA–19.8; YPG–315.7, YPA–215.7
CV notes: CV is having one of its best seasons of the 2000s and won three straight games by a 158-8 margin before losing at Montgomery a week ago. The Indians also have a quality, youthful foundation in place going forward and have made major strides throughout this decade, appearing in the playoffs for the third time in five years. Junior Kegan Lane became just the team’s fifth player of the 2000s to go over 1,000 yards last week and topped 100 yards in five consecutive games at one point. The offense took off when former running back Dave Hess moved to quarterback in Week 7. Hess scored touchdowns three different ways in each of his first three starts, returning a kickoff for a score against North Penn-Mansfield. Hess, also a junior, has more than 1,000 career rushing and receiving yards and has thrown seven touchdowns in four starts. Sophomore Cam Stahli is a big-play threat in the passing game and Levi Stahli provides depth at receiver after throwing eight touchdowns at quarterback. The defense has been outstanding down the stretch and sophomore Stevie Olson has an area-high nine sacks. Lane has eight, as well as 280 career tackles.
CV Player to watch–Luke Sottolano: His numbers may not be as gaudy as some of his teammates, but that’s because the senior two-way lineman does a lot of dirty work and commands a lot of attention which frees them up. An excellent interior player, Sottolano has helped stuff the run, has four sacks and has played a crucial role in helping the offense score at least 35 points five times.
Southern PPG–41.2, PPA–14.4; YPG–371.7, YPA–213.6
Southern notes: Troy snapped Southern’s seven-year reign as state champions last season, but the Tigers (9-1) returned most of those players and seem eager to exact revenge. Southern has won nine straight games since a season-opening loss against Wyomissing and has gone into overdrive the past two weeks, scoring 61 points in consecutive games against Bloomsburg and Shikellamy. The offensive line has dominated and helped Southern top 400 yards rushing each time. Versatile running back Brayden Andrews is closing in on a second straight 1,000-yard season and he, Grady Garcia and Joey Williams all went over 80 yards at Shikellamy. Southern has been going with the run mostly the last few games, but junior quarterback Ayden Hockenbroch went over 1,000 yards last season and has thrown 12 touchdowns this year. Southern is tied with CV and Montoursville with an area-high four shutouts and held Bloomsburg to 134 yards two weeks ago. John Quinton returned an interception for a score in that game and Brady Arnold took back a blocked punt for a touchdown against Shikellamy, helping Southern erase a 28-21 second quarter deficit.
Southern Player to watch–Chase Williams: The junior defensive end is having an all-state caliber season, collecting 22 tackles for loss and five sacks. He has tackles for loss in nine of 10 games and averages 5.9 tackles per game. He also wreaks havoc on special teams, blocking four punts.
Winner plays: Loyalsock or Bloomsburg
Outlook: We pretty much know how this game is going to go, but what happens here does not diminish at all the outstanding season CV has had. This program has come light years from where it was a few years ago and looks like it may have a bright future as well.
