Football roundup: Loyalsock defeats Danville on the road
A 27-point first half was key in lifting Loyalosck to a 34-20 win over Danville on the road on Friday night in Week 8 action. Danville took a 12-0 lead, but from there, the Lancers’ fought back.
Jalil Coates had two 1-yard touchdowns on consecutive possessions which gave the Lancers a 14-12 lead heading into the second quarter. Coates them scored a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter, with a touchdown pass from Danny Dowell to Nahmir Thomas sandwiched in between.
Coates had a huge game for the Lancers, rushing for 205 yards on an impressive 47 carries. He also caught two receptions for 34 yards.
Loyalsock out-gained Danville in total yards, 333-317.
Danville was led by Ben Koser’s 180 passing yards and two touchdowns.
MILTON 47, MIDD-WEST 0
Milton’s Monty Fisher surpassed 1,000 yards rushing and accounted for five touchdowns in Milton’s 47-0 shutout of Midd-West in a Heartland Athletic Conference crossover game Friday in Middleburg.
Fisher scored three times on the ground and tossed two touchdowns in the win.
Midd-West (1-7) never really got on track.
The teams opened by exchanging punts, with Midd-West’s stop coming on a big fake punt rush attempt by Fisher at its own 44.
In the ensuing drive, the Black Panthers’ (3-5) Brady O’Rourke returned an interception for a touchdown to put the first points on the board with 8:59 to play in the first quarter.
On the next possession, O’Rourke got his seventh sack of the season, which helped force another Midd-West punt.
Milton’s defense controlled the line of scrimmage. The teams again exchanged punts, but Midd-West had to kick out of its own end zone, setting up a Black Panthers scoring drive that ended with Fisher and Jensen Souder hooking up on a 25-yard touchdown pass.
WELLSBORO 49, CANTON 7
Marek Mascho ran for 117 yards on 13 carries, Griffin Morral had 75 rushing yards on eight carries with two touchdowns and Wellsboro cruised past Canton, 49-7.
The Green Hornets held Canton to just 178 yards of total offense. Wellsboro led 49-7 by halftime. Kody Enck had back-to-back interception returns on consecutive possessions for two scores in the second quarter.
TROY 58, NP-MANSFIELD 10
Defending state champion Troy defeated Mansfield by 48 points in Week 8. Kael MIllard scored on a 23-yard touchdown run before Mansfield tied the game when Luke Kreger threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to Colton Pellett with 7:27 to play in the first quarter.
That was the closest Mansfield got to upsetting Troy, however.
Mason Smith had a 12-yard touchdown run less than two minutes later and Brendan Gilliland broke a 43-yard touchdown run and Troy took a 21-7 lead into the second quarter.
In the second, Smith threw a 10-yard touchdown to Josiah Penesky, Gavin Lykon-Leffler kicked a 25-yard field goal and Millard had a 1-yard touchdown run to extend its lead.
