Hollidaysburg at Williamsport preview

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport’s schedule doesn’t get any easier down the stertch. After facing Jersey Shore, Shamokin and Berwick in consecutive weeks, the Millionaires host undefeated Hollidaysburg in Week 9.

Hollidaysburg PPG–39.1, PPA–13.4; YPG–395.3

Hollidaysburg notes: Hollidaysburg (8-0) is playing excellent football again a year after reaching the 5A state quarterfinals. The Tigers have won seven of their eight games by double-digit margins and are coming off 52-7 and 42-14 wins against Jersey Shore and Selinsgrove, respectively, as they continue their District 4 swing. Hollidaysburg is seventh in the state rankings and has scored 52 and 42 straight points after falling behind 7-0 early in its last two games. A big, physical team, Hollidaysburg 297 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Cole Delattre and Carter Muth have both gone over 900 yards and combined for 28 touchdowns. Delattre also has thrown for 783 yards and eight touchdowns. Josh Banks has been the biggest threat in the receiving game, scoring on three of his eight catches and averaging 17.9 yards per catch. The starting defense has allowed just two touchdowns the past two games with Selinsgrove scoring on the game’s opening kickoff last Friday. Banks averages a team-high 7.6 tackles per game and has 13 tackles for loss. Hollidaysburg intercepted four passes against Jersey Shore with Banks picking off three and returning one for a touchdown.

Hollidaysburg Player to watch–Joseph Richardson: The junior defensive end is having a big season and leads Hollidaysburg with nine sacks and 19 tackles for loss. Richardson has sacks in six of his eight games this year, including two last week at Selinsgrove. He also has forced two fumbles.

Williamsport PPG–26.3, PPA–32.1; YPG–296, YPA–394.4

Williamsport notes: Williamsport (4-4) plays its home finale tonight, but will earn another home game if it holds onto the No. 2 seed in the District 2-4 Class AAAA field. The defending champions play top-seeded Wilkes-Barre next week, so the top seed also is still possible. The Millionaires are facing an undefeated team for a third consecutive game and could be without quarterback Tevin Williams who was injured a week ago at Berwick after totaling 215 yards and two touchdowns before his exit. Williams has gone over 1,000 yards passing in his first season as the team’s quarterback and the sophomore has totaled 20 touchdowns and 1,647 yards. Kason Ulmer would start if Williams cannot play and received valuable experience at Berwick while throwing for 64 yards. Stopping the run has been a problem during a four-game losing streak and Berwick ran for 517 yards a week ago. The defense is young and features just two senior starters but has some strong playmakers with linebackers Lucas Naughton and Anthony Manley both averaging well over 10 tackles per game. Sophomore Davahgei Dymeck has had a breakout season and also averages more than 10 tackles. Cordoza Minor has three sacks and Manley 2 ½. Brayden Ungard has made a big impact in his first season playing football and is second among area kickers with four field goals, including two from 39 yards.

Williamsport Player to watch–Giovanni White: Williamsport’s Mr. Everything, White is a threat in all areas. He has a 200-yard rushing game this season and also is second on the team with 17 catches for 312 yards. White also returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown in the season opener at Wyoming Valley West and has intercepted a pass.

Outlook: Between the injuries and the way things have gone the last few weeks, this looks like it could be a blowout. But many said the same thing a year ago when Williamsport traveled to Hollidaysburg and it nearly pulled a stunner leading by 10 with less than five minutes to play before Hollidaysburg won, 30-26. The point is, anything can happen.

Starting at $2.99/week.
