Local roundup: Hughesville girls volleyball has success at home

Hughesville went 1-3 at its own tournament, falling to Wyalusing 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-23) and Montoursville 3-1 (20-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-20) before beating Loyalsock in a five-set thriller (16-25, 25-10, 20-25, 25-22, 15-7).

Against Loyalsock, junior Anna Easton led the team wtih 14 kills and 11 blocks and was followed by senior Abby Miller’s six kills. Senior Ava Gorg and freshman Addy Mowrey both had five kills.

Junior Ella Mowrey controlled the offense with 21 assists and added six digs on defense. Defensively, she was joined by junior Lyla Kinney and freshman Addy Mowrey, who each had five digs.

“The match was a great display of athleticism and teamwork, highlighted by a rally that lasted over a minute,” Hughesville coach Brandi Liddic said. “The level of competition throughout the match was eceptional for both teams.”

Against Montoursville, Ella Mowrey had 14 assists and 10 digs and Easton had 13 blocks and 11 kills.

• The last time North Penn-Mansfield’s girls soccer team qualified for the postseason, the current players on the team were in elementary school. Now, they can say they’re part of history.

Mansfield won its regular-season finale over Northeast Bradford, 2-1, to qualify for the District 4 Class A playoffs for the first time in 10 years.

Northeast Bradford took an early lead but Adalyne Yungwirth and Brooke Wilcox scored consecutive goals within a minute and a half of each other to give Mansfield a 2-1 lead it didn’t let up. Wilcox had an assist off a corner kick and Abby Garverick added an assist.

Muncy scored a goal in each half to defeat Danville, 2-1, in the Indians’ regular-season finale prior to districts. The Indians’ Ella Nagel scored on a penalty kick six minutes before halftime for a 1-0 goal. The Ironmen’s Grace Kitka scored four minutes into the second half to tie the game until Ava Eyer scored off a Kiki Woodward assist in the 63rd minute to go ahead. Muncy out-shot Danville, 10-4, and Eva Nagel had three saves.

Sullivan County played its final regular-season game against Mount Carmel and earned a 8-0 win. Lily McCarty had three goals, Quinn Pennella had two and Trinity Rohe scored her first varsity goal.

Seniors Kira Hottenstein and Alana Olson both scored as well. The four seniors — McCarty, Olson, Hottenstein and goalie Mariah Hallabuk — had solid games to end their careers.

Hallabuk posted a shutout in goal as well.

The win ends Sullivan’s season with a 6-12 record. McCarty concluded her senior year with 26 goals with eight assists while Pennella, just a freshman, scored 16 with six assists. Hallabuk had 266 saves this season and ended with an impressive 774 for her career.

• Milton defeated Warrior Run, 3-0, in boys soccer. Goal scorers for the Black Panthers weren’t available.

Warrior Run out-shot Milton, 16-10, but couldn’t get a goal to fall.

• In a place where they had won only one in 24 previous meetings, senior Christian Woobay converted an 80th-minute penalty kick to lift the Lycoming College men’s soccer team to a 3-2 Landmark Conference win over Elizabethtown College.

Woobay was fouled as he dribbled in the box, setting up the penalty kick, where he converted his fifth goal of the year and put the Warriors (4-6-4 overall, 1-3-2 Landmark) just two points behind Drew (8-3-2 overall, 2-2-1 Landmark) in the sixth and final conference championship slot with three games remaining in the regular season.

Freshman Xavier Dandridge got the Warriors on the board in the 37th minute, firing a shot off the right crossbar and in after getting a long pass from senior Chris Djadja, dodging a pair of defenders en route.

Logan Pietrzak netted three-straight shots to help Penn College to a 5-1 win over Gallaudet in a United East men’s soccer match Saturday. The Wildcats improved to 3-1-2 UE, 8-5-2 overall, while the Bison fell to 1-5, 1-11.

After GU took an early 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, the Wildcats fired in five unanswered goals. Pietrzak tallied the equalizer in the 34th minute to deadlock the match at the break. He later converted passes from Robert Antonini, in the 49th minute, and Cooper Smith, in the 50th minute, to put PCT ahead, 3-1. Scott Goldfeder made it 4-1 in the 60th minute when he finished Sean McGroarty’s pass, and Jimmy Friedman found Garrett Gill in the 73rd minute.

• A second-half free-kick goal from junior Norah Mosley helped lift the Lycoming College women’s soccer team to a program-record tying 15th win of the season, taking a 1-0 decision from Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference action.

The win helped the Warriors (15-1 overall, 5-1 Landmark) tie the program record of 15 wins set by the 2024 team, which went 15-3-3. The win also moved the Warriors within a point of clinching a Landmark Conference Championship slot for the second straight year.

Mosley’s goal came with 28:49 remaining, as she took a free kick from the right corner, finding the left side of the net with a high-arcing shot for her eighth score of the year.

Senior Riley Block broke the school-record for wins in a season as she improved to 13-1, breaking the mark of 12 set by Jessica Bennett in 2004. She stopped six shots in her fourth shutout of the season. Ella Smith stopped four shots for the Blue Jays (5-5-4 overall, 3-3 Landmark).

Lock Haven closed the book on the 2025 Homecoming Weekend by hosting Shepherd in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division contest as Shepherd won, 4-0.

Lock Haven (3-7-2, 2-7-2 PSAC) limited Shepherd (7-1-5, 6-1-5 PSAC) to just one goal in the first half, but the Rams scored three times in the final 45 minutes to seal the victory.

Megan Miller finished with three saves, moving her career total into a tie for first all-time in program history with 331.

In the first half, Shepherd found the back on the net in the fourth minute, but The Haven shutout the Rams from there to head into the half trailing 1-0.

Penn College blanked Penn State Brandywine, 5-0, in a United East Conference clash. Penn College improved to 4-1 in United East play, 11-1-2 overall. The Lions fell to 2-4 UE, 6-5-1 overall.

With the victory and some help around the field, the Wildcats clinched their fourth-straight United East Playoff berth and earned its ninth postseason trip in the NCAA-era.

The Wildcats posted its ninth shutout of the season while Sara Darlington scored her third hat-trick in four games, with goals in the 23rd, 56th, and 76th minute. Ella Garman also played into the scoring column with goals in the 75th and 84th minutes, respectively.

• The Lycoming College field hockey team honored its nine graduating seniors and took a lead into the fourth quarter in a 3-2 overtime defeat in a Landmark Conference matchup against Elizabethtown College.

Elizabethtown (6-9, 3-3) tied the game early in the fourth quarter and won it just shy of halfway through the first extra period, snapping Lycoming’s (9-5, 3-3) three-game winning streak in the Warriors’ first overtime contest of the season.

Despite the Warriors outshooting the Blue Jays 7-1 in the opening quarter, Elizabethtown connected on that lone shot, with Hannah Long scoring off a pass from Drew Bridges to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead six minutes into the contest.

Mansfield came up short in a hard-fought contest against ranked No. 5 West Chester.Jenna Duke and Sophia Vadnais each had goals on the day with assists by Amanda Ray and Regan Fiorito.

The Golden Rams struck first just over a minute into the game off a penalty-corner goal.Mansfield answered later in the first quarter when Vandias buried a rebound from Ray to even the score at 1-1.

• Holding Elizabethtown College to a .106 hitting percentage, the Lycoming College volleyball team kicked off a tri-match at Thompson Gymnasium with a five-set Landmark Conference win, 15-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 15-13, over the hosts before falling in three sets, 25-15, 25-11, 25-5, to Rowan University.

The Warriors (13-11 overall, 2-5 Landmark) jumped into sixth place in the Landmark Conference with the win as the team gets set for the final weekend of the regular season with a chance to earn one of the six conference tournament bids.

Freshman Kamryn Skeith had 15 kills, 19 assists, eight digs and four blocks against the Blue Jays (13-10 overall, 1-4 Landmark) and freshman Addison Morgan also had a double-double with 18 assists and 13 digs.

Senior Cameron Upcraft Penns Valley posted 10 kills and seven blocks, posting a .286 hitting percentage. Freshman Charlene Petreshock added nine kills and seven digs and first-year Emi Wenger added seven kills and 14 digs.

Homecoming Weekend finished off with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division victory for the Lock Haven volleyball team. The Bald Eagles stumped the Kutztown Golden Bears, 3-1 (25-22, 25-14, 12-25, 25-23).

Madelyn Mitchell paced the Bald Eagles’ offense with 16 kills and added two aces on the night.

Gabby Gealey distributed the ball effectively, finishing with 25 assists, while Madelyn Wagner also contributed 18 assists to the team’s offensive effort.
