Local roundup: Loyalsock boys soccer beats Mifflinburg, CM defeats Midd-West
Loyalsock avenged an early-season loss to Mifflinubrg on Wednesday with a 3-1 win at home against the Wildcats. With playoff implications on the line late in the season, the Lancers responded with poise and precision.
Mifflinburg’s Grady Burbaker opened the scoring in the 25th minute, but the Lancers would respond four minutes later thanks to a Wesley JOhnson goal to tie it, 1-1. It was assisted by Gabriel Deprenda.
The two took a 1-1 game into the break. In the second half, David Bjorkman put Loyalsock ahead in the 57th minute off a setup from Aiden Wetzler. Wetzler then added a goal of his own six minutes later with a Dylan Eck assist to help seal the game.
The win moves the Lancers to 6-8-1 as Loyalsock travels to Shamokon on Saturday.
Facing a Midd-West team ranked No. 6 in the state in Class AA with a 13-1-1 record, the Central Mountain boys soccer team proved up to the task, defeating the Mustangs, 2-1, behind strong play from its seniors. In their last home game at Central Mountain, the class left it all out on the line, with both goals and assists being posted by seniors.
Tim Brinker got the Wildcats on the board early on an assist from Dylan Bechdel. And when the Mustangs responded to tie it at 1-1 heading into the break, it wouldn’t take them long to take back the lead, as Kullen McDermit headed in a free kick from Cole Cooper to make it 2-1 Central Mountain.
From there, goalkeeper Jaggar Pardoe kept the Mustangs offense at bay.
It was a strong win for a team that’s been building up momentum heading into postseason, as it improved to 8-5-3 on the season. It’ll look to finish strong on the road at Altoona next week.
“Jaggar Pardoe played fantastic in goal with countless saves throughout the evening,” said Central Mountain head coach on Pardoe. “Unbelievable team performance for 80 minutes.”
Montoursville and Hughesville battled hard but neither came away a winner as the two drew to a 1-1 double overtime tie. It’s the second straight tie for Montoursville, just two days after battling Loyalsock to a scoreless draw.
MOntoursville scored in the 45th minute when Gian Carmine found Simon Dietrich for a goal. With less than three minutes to play, the Spartans broke through when Carter Gormont scored off a Sam Haddon assist.
Mason Fry had five saves for Montoursville while Royce Gardner had four for the Spartans.
Hughesville, now 7-8-2, has a season-finale matchup at home against Shikellamy on Oct. 14. With a win, the Spartans would seal a playoff berth for the first time since 2019.
Max Fink had seven saves and Williamsport out-shot Selinsgrove, but Nick Bisaccia scored twice to lift the Seals to a 2-0 win against the Millionaires. Williamsport held a 12-11 shots advantage but couldn’t get a goal to fall.
Caleb Langdon scored off an assist by Gavin Folmar in the first half in the ninth minute to give Milton an early lead and the Black Panthers added another goal for a 2-0 win against Jersey Shore. Tobin Strous scored two minutes into the second half and Milton held on from there, out-shooting Jersey Shore, 17-8.
Ori Kennel scored four goals, Gideon Kennel had a goal and two assists and Christian Cirilo had two assists as Warrior Run earned a 6-1 win against Shamokin on the road.
Austin Hartzel put Muncy ahead in the first half with 15 minutes to play, but South Williamsport scored three goals in the final seven minutes to earn a 3-1 win. Kaiden Paulhamus, Gavin Freas and Carson Harris all scored for South Williamsport. Feas and Trent Rogers both had an assist as well.
• North Penn-Mansfield scored a second-half goal and battled through two overtime periods to tie Wellsboro, 1-1. The Green Hornets took a lead in the 38th minute when Kate Bryant scored unassisted. In the 53rd minute, Brooke Wilox was assisted by Colette Frey.
“This was a fun and exciting game tonight for everyone to watch,” North Penn-Mansfield coach Maryann Wilcox said. “Both teams played really well. Wellsboro took more shots than Mansfield, but the possession was about 50/50. Great effort by both teams.”
Wellsboro held a 17-10 shots advantage.
“I’m proud of the way our girls battled on the road against a red-hot Mansfield team. One tough bounce led to their goal, but we responded well and created chances,” Wellsboro coach Michael Reese said. “We just couldn’t get that second one to fall, but the effort and composure were there from start to finish.”
• Milton earned a 4-0 win in girls field hockey against Warrior Run. NIckole Brouse, Samantha Krall, Alyvia Russell and Elle McConnell all scored while Gabby Chubb had two assists and Nickole Brouse had one.
• The Lycoming College volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win over crosstown rival Penn College, winning 25-9, 25-12, 25-14 at Lamade Gymnasium. Lycoming (11-8) hit .388 as a team and did not trail the entire match as they secured their second sweep in a row, allowing just 35 points to Penn College (4-16), the fewest allowed by the Warriors since allowing 34 points to Wilson on Sept. 17, 2022.
The Warriors roared out of the gate in the first set, blowing up a close set early (5-4) with a 20-4 run to close the set. Lycoming built a 9-2 lead in the second set and never looked back. The third set saw the Warriors score the first five points and keeping the Wildcats at bay to secure the sweep.
Freshman Kamryn Skeith led the Warriors with eight kills, seven assists and three aces. Freshman Charlene Petreshock added six kills. Junior Haley Balgavy racked up a team-high 15 assists and three aces, while junior Ima Mercado had a team-high eight digs plus a pair of aces.
• With nine saves, including three in the third quarter, senior Isabella Bobe became the first goalkeeper in the history of the Lycoming College field hockey program to reach 500 career saves to highlight the game at the University of Scranton, as the team fell, 4-0.
Bobe posted five saves in the second period to give her six in a scoreless game at halftime, leaving her two shy of the milestone, which she reached with 2:47 left in the third quarter.
Scranton (9-3 overall, 3-0 Landmark) scored three times in the third quarter and once in the fourth to post the win, with Annie Shaw posting two goals and an assist to lead the Royals.
