Local roundup: Loyalsock, Wellsboro boys battle to 0-0 double overtime draw

Loyalsock and Wellsboro battled to a hard-fought double overtime draw on Tuesday night after 100 minutes of competitive soccer.

“Both teams generated scoring chances throughout regulation and two overtime periods, but neither side could find the back of the net,” Loyalsock coach Steve Ertel said.

Loyalsock controlled much of the possession in the game, recording 12 shots and adding 11 corner kicks, but the Green Hornets defense held firm.

Connor Lang anchored the back line with nine saves and secured the shutout as Wellsboro recorded nine shots, four corner kicks and six saves from Camden Tom.

Loyalsock, now 7-8-2, heads into Thursday’s home match against Shikellamy with a playoff berth on the line in Class AA.

“I continue to be pleased with the boys effort to execute the tactics we’re asking of them,” Wellsboro coach Todd Fitch said. “I’m hopeful that we can use the time before the postseason to fine-tune some areas.”

• After falling behind by a goal in the 10th minute, Muncy scored three goals — two by halftime — to defeat Jersey Shore, 3-1, and improve to 13-2-1 in girls soccer.

Ava Eyer had two goals and Kiki Woodward scored. Alexis McKeta, Rachel Paulhamus and Eyer all had assists.

The Bulldogs’ goal came 9 minutes, 11 seconds into the game on a Rees Bierly goal on an assist by Leena Loomis.

A hat trick by Sammy Roarty helped propel Milton to a 8-1 win on senior night against Towanda. Makayla Loreman and Gabby Gauger each scored twice and Kat Bennage added a goal.

• In girls volleyball, Lewisburg blanked Lourdes, 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-20). Clair Chandler reached a milestone by recording her 500th career assist as she had 19 in addition to nine aces and two kills on Tuesday.

Virginia Morini had seven kills, four digs and two aces, Ella Vance had four kills, two digs and an ace and Brooke Leauber had four kills and an ace.

Penelope Voneida had four kills, Ellis Reed had three kills and a block and Addison Putman had two aces.

• The Lycoming College men’s soccer team fell to Goucher College, 1-0, in Landmark Conference action. Sophomore Jace Bennett stopped two shots in the game, as both teams fired 14 shots in the contest, with freshman Leandro Cruz taking four to lead the Warriors (3-6-4 overall, 0-3-2 Landmark).

Jonathan Adima scored the game’s lone goal in the 57th minute off a corner kick from Bryan Machado.Ale Sternini stopped five shots in the shutout for the Gophers (5-5-3 overall, 2-3 Landmark).

The Warriors are back on the field on Saturday, when they head to Elizabethtown College for a 3:30 p.m. Landmark Conference game.

• Lock Haven men’s cross country standout Jakob Rager has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference men’s cross country Athlete of the Week.

The honor is the first PSAC weekly award for the Bald Eagles this season. The Bald Eagles, ranked No. 7 team in the Atlantic Region, finished second of 16 teams in the Highlander Invitational on Saturday morning.

Leading the way for Lock Haven was Rager, who finished third after covering the 8,000-meter course with a blazing time of 24:49.9.

• Lycoming’s volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-10) to No. 5 Juniata University in a Landmark Conference match.

Three-time defending national champion Juniata (18-2, 5-0)fell behind Lycoming (12-10, 1-4) twice in the third set before the Eagles took control.

The Warriors were led by senior Cameron Upcraft with five kills, while reigning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week freshman Kamryn Skeith led the team with six assists and four digs, while also registering her 200th kill of the season.

The Eagles hit .455 in the match and were led by eight kills from Hannah Webber, 19 assists from Mari Hansen, 11 aces from Isabella Rushing and seven digs from Maggie Hayes.

Lock Haven opened a week-long homestand with an emphatic victory over Bloomsburg. Lock Haven won the match 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) on Tuesday (Oct. 14). It was the second time the Bald Eagles defeated Bloomsburg on the season, improving to 3-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division play.

The Bald Eagles opened the match strong, outscoring Bloomsburg 25-17, with 14 kills and two blocks in the first set.

Not much changed in the second set, 14 kills, three blocks and four service aces led Lock Haven to a 25-21 score.

Lock Haven closed out the match with a dominant final frame. Putting the Huskies away with a 25-16 score, behind 14 kills and 3 service aces.

Maddie Mitchell led the Bald Eagles’ attack with 12 kills in the contest. Lola Coulter also added nine kills to the Lock Haven offense, followed by eight more from Gracelynn Wolzen.
