Local roundup: Montoursville volleyball falls in districts while Loyalsock advances

Montoursville’s first year competing in girls volleyball proved to be an outstanding one as the Warriors reached the postseason in their first year competing. The Warriors lost to Towanda, 3-0, in a District 4 Class AA play-in game, ending an outstanding year.

Montoursville lost 25-13, 25-10, 25-11. Emma Ammerman led Montoursville with 20 digs, March Manotti had 15 and Ashley Wood added 12. Allie Eberhart also had nine digs and both Novella Oweyo and Sydney Clark had seven. Montoursville’s Laney Yonkin had a team-high five kills.

Loyalsock defeated Lewisburg in the District 4 Class AA quarterfinals, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-17). The loss ended Lewisburg’s regular season 10-9.

Statistics for Loyalsock were not made available.

Ella Vance had six digs, five kills and three aces for Lewisburg, Claire Chandler had 13 assists with four digs, Virginia Morini had three kills and Penelope Voneida added three kills.

Ellis Reed had four digs and an ace to go with two kills, Brooke Leauber had a kill and ace and Aaliyah Bleich had four digs.

The win advances Loyalsock to face Wellsboro on Tuesday.

Wellsboro defeated Wyalusing, 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 21-25, 15-9) in the district playoffs. Kendall Sweet had a team-high 11 kills, Ellie Largey had 15 assists and Taylor main added 10 assists.

Peyton Keane had seven aces and led Wellsboro with 13 digs. Wellsboro’s maddy Cruttenden and Main both had six digs and Ady Frantz had four solo blocks.

• Montgomery’s girls soccer team suffered a lopsided 9-0 loss to District 4 power Southern Columbia in the District 4 Class A quarterfinals. This marked the second straight season the Red Raiders have been in the postseason.

Southern Columbia led 6-0 in the first half as Alyssa Conner had two goals while Kailee Helwig, Harper Thompson, Olivia Jones and Bella Snyder all had first-half goals. Conner ended her day with a hat trick while Thompson had two goals. Snyder added three assists for the Tigers.

Montgomery out-shot Southern Columbia, 16-1, as Montgomery’s Zoe Furman recorded seven saves.

• Central Mountain’s boys and girls cross country teams competed at the District 6 championships on Saturday at Indiana Valley Elementary. The girls and boys teams both finished sixth overall in their respective fields.

Senior Aubrey Eiler led central Mountain’s girls team with a 24th-place finish with a PR of 21:33.50. Emma Wolfe took 29th and Kaylie mcCloskey took 30th and both also set PRs.

Wolfe ran a 21:54.10 and McCloskey finished in 21:57.00.

Rounding out the top finishers for Central Mountain were Abigail Winslow (38th, 23:25.20); Calienna Cardinal (40, 23:55.80), Addison Knipe (24:52.90, PR) and Kennedy Metzger (28;43.20, PR).

Central Mountain senior Damien Winner was the top boys runner with a 24th-place finish in 17:89.80. Shane Walker ran an 18:49.60 to take 31st and Gabriel Houser ran a 18;51.20, a PR for 32nd. central Mountain’s Shayden Hill ran a 19:11.40 for 35th and Che McAllister ran a 19:25.30 for 36th.

Central Mountain’s William Stout (20:33.30), Cody Cardinal (21:06.70), Owen Rippey (22:28.80) and conner Gray (27:55.40) all had PRs.

• Mansfield’s sprint football team defeated Cornell, 27-13, to win the Josh Palmer Pigskin Classic Game.

Weston Bellows had 24 carries for 170 yards and two scores to lead the Mounties (4-1, 2-0 CSFL North) offensively. Marcus Quaker had 102 yards through the air and a pair of passing touchdowns. Defensively for Mansfield, Antonio Green Jr. and Matt Machmer each had their third interceptions of the season. Jackson Taylor led the team in tackles with 16.

Mansfield’s defense made the first statement as Green Jr. intercepted a Cornell (0-5, 0-3 CSFL North) pass in the redzone. That lead to a nine-play drive that was punctuated as Quaker found Brady Deneen out of the backfield for the 14-yard touchdown. Nolan Zona broke the Mansfield sprint football career extra points records to give the Mountaineers the 7-0 lead.

• Sophomore Ella Magee became the fifth Lycoming College women’s soccer player to reach 15 goals in a season with a 30-yard dart to tie the game, as Lycoming earned a 1-1 draw with Landmark Conference foe Susquehanna University to retain the River Derby Cup.

Magee has notched 15 goals and 13 assists this year, sitting in a tie for second in goals and setting the program record for assists.

Her goal on Saturday came in the final minute of the first half after Susquehanna (8-8-2 overall, 3-3-2 Landmark) scored off a corner kick in the third minute. After Lewisburg graduate Mikayla Long drew a foul, Magee lined up and found the upper right corner with a direct kick.

• The Lycoming College men’s soccer team scored one goal in each half and extended the Boot’s stay in Williamsport as they defeated Susquehanna University, 2-0, in Landmark Conference play. Lycoming (5-6-5, 2-3-3) is 9-0-2 against Susquehanna (5-9-3, 1-4-3) since 2014, retaining the rivalry game trophy between the two sides with the Warriors’ sixth shutout of the season.

The Warriors had a pair of promising attacks early on that were turned back by the River Hawks, but broke through in the 34th minute, when Lycoming was awarded a penalty kick and senior Christian Woobay punched it into the net for his sixth goal of the year, starting his Senior Day off with the score that gave Lycoming a 1-0 lead at the halftime intermission.

Ten minutes after halftime, the Warriors doubled the score. Sophomore Xavier Dandridge found junior Aidan Stillman on the right side, who curled a shot past the outstretched keeper into the left side of the net for his first goal of the year, giving Lycoming a 2-0 advantage.

Penn College fell 3-0 to Penn State Harrisburg in a United East match. The Wildcats wrapped up the regular season at 4-2-2 UE, 9-6-2 overall, while the Nittany Lions improved to 7-0-1, 9-6-2.

Harrisburg took an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute and doubled its score in the 16th minute. The Lions added a late goal in the 79th. The Wildcats had one quality attempt on goal, but Cooper Smith’s shot in the 66th minute was saved.

Harrisburg outshot PCT, 9-4 (5-1 on-goal) and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Justin Crismale turned away two shots in goal for the Wildcats.

Lock Haven picked up an impressive 3-1 victory at California (Pa.). The Bald Eagles earned an important three points in a tight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division race, where the Haven currently sits in third place, just a point behind Seton Hill for second. The win moves Lock Haven’s unbeaten streak to six games.

After a scoreless first half, Noah Brady got the scoring started with a 53rd-minute goal off a Kade Black assist. Twenty minutes later, in the 73rd minute, Brady added another goal from Carter Rosno.

• The Lycoming College field hockey team were knotted up through three quarters with second-place Susquehanna University, but a pair of fourth-quarter tallies sent Susquehanna to a 3-1 Landmark Conference victory.

Susquehanna (11-7, 7-1) scored twice in less than three minutes early in the final period to outlast Lycoming (10-5, 4-4) in the penultimate match of the 2025 regular season.

After a scoreless first period, the River Hawks took the lead with just nine seconds to go in the first half, when Haley Dreisbach found the cage off a pass from Taylor Rothermel.

The Warriors made their first shot count, with sophomore Lacy Eckard, a Muncy graduate, taking a pass from senior Riley Marines and scoring her sixth goal of the year, tying the game at one just over ten minutes after halftime.

Mansfield dropped an away contest to nationally ranked No. 2 Shippensburg, 3-1. The Raiders struck first with a goal in the second quarter to hold a 1-0 lead at the break. Mansfield (5-11, 1-7 PSAC) responded early in the third when Ella du Plessis connected with Jenna Duke for the equalizer, providing the Mounties with needed momentum.

Shippensburg quickly countered with a second goal later in the third quarter to reclaim the advantage.

• Senior Megan Klansek led the Lycoming College women’s swim team with a second-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke to highlight a meet with NCAA Division II Lock Haven. Lock Haven (2-1) won the meet 117-60, but Lycoming (0-3) put up its highest point total of the young season.

Freshman Elizabeth Eberz took third the 50-yard butterfly in 35.76, with fellow Warrior, senior Anasten Holbrook coming in fourth in 36:40. Holbrook also took third in the 50-yard backstroke in 37.04.

The Warriors also got first-place points in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with Pool, Eberz, and seniors Megan Lonergan and Klansek turning in a time 2:01.79 and freshman Riley Pool took third place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:30.63. Lonergan took third in the 1650-yard freestyle and Eberz was third in the 100-yard freestyle.

• The 2025 regular season came to a close for the Lycoming College volleyball team with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21) Landmark Conference defeat against Moravian University. Lycoming finishes the regular season with a 13-14 record and 2-7 mark in the Landmark, playing three competitive sets, but coming just short each time against Moravian (12-12, 4-3).

In her final match at Lamade Gym, the Warriors’ lone senior Cameron Upcraft delivered a strong effort with a team-high and season-best 12 kills, while adding three blocks, also most on the squad.

Freshman Charlene Petreshock added seven kills, while freshman Kamryn Skeith had six kills, eight digs, and a team-leading 16 assists. Junior Haley Balgavy added ten assists, while sophomore Jadea Toth, a Williamsport graduate, led the team with 16 digs.

Lock Haven rallied from down 2-0 against Roberts Wesleyan this Saturday (Oct. 25) and picked up a 3-2 comeback victory at home. The Bald Eagles won 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 15-11) in an exciting non-conference match. With the victory, Lock Haven has won three of its last four matches to improve to 7-14 overall, while Roberts Wesleyan falls to 2-18.

The entire team stepped up for The Haven, while Maddie Mitchell led the offense with a team-high 13 kills. Mitchell added 20 digs as well. Lola Coulter and Avery Smith also added 11 kills.

Madelyn Wagner (24 assists) and Gabby Gealey (21 assists) played their part on offense as well, combining for 45 of the teams 53 assists. Natalie Acevedo and Olivia Taylor each had four service aces.

Lock Haven led Roberts Wesleyan in kills over the first two sets (21-18), despite dropping them.

• The Lycoming College men’s golf team posted a 57-over-par 345 on the first day at the Landmark Conference Fall Preview at the par-72, 6,714-yard Shawnee Golf Resort.

All four Warriors finished in the 80s for the team, led by freshman Tre Lesparance, who posted a 10-over-par 82, freshman Hill Meserve, who posted a 15-over-par 87 and junior Will Eberz and freshman Ryan Ault, a Jersey Shore graduate, who each posted a 16-over-par 88.

• The Lock Haven cross country team traveled to Edinboro to compete in the 2025 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships. Kaydence Strange and Katy Todd led the Haven women in the 6K by placing in the top 50 out of 157 runners.

Strange placed 35th in 23:52.0, and Todd placed 43rd in 24:04.4.

Adra Schell placed 73rd in 24:52.7, while Paige Watson and Kristen Schellberg rounded out Lock Haven’s top five finishers today with times of 25:55.4 (107th) and 26:05.2 (113th).

The Lock Haven men’s cross country team finished fifth of 15 teams. Brayden Frair and Jakob Rager both finished in the top-15, earning first-team All-Conference honors. Today marks the team’s best finish since 2022 and it is the first time since 2021 that two Bald Eagles earned First Team All-PSAC honors.

Frair led the way for Lock Haven, finishing seventh out of 154 finishers, after covering the 8,000-meter course in 25:06.7. Friar was the leading freshman finisher in the race.

Rager also impressed, finishing 12th with a time of 25:33.9. and earning him back-to-back first-team honors and his third All-Conference honors of his career.

Cowanesque Valley graduate Kristian Mizdail finished just outside of the top-30 with a time of 26:16.1. coming in 31st.
