Local roundup: Montoursville, Williamsport, CM girls volleyball teams all earn wins
Montoursville earned a four-set win against Sugar Valley to improve to 6-7 in girls volleyball action on Tuesday night. Montoursville won the first set, 25-10 and the second, 25-20, before Sugar Valley won the third, 25-21. In the fourth set, Montoursville closed it out to win, 25-12.
Ruth Lauchle led Montoursville with 11 assists and added four digs. Emma Ammerman had a team-high 22 digs while Laney Yonkin had nine, March Manotti had eight and Londyn Williamson had six. Yonkin also had eight assists and Novella Oweyo had two.
Williamsport earned a 3-0 win against Midd-West at home (25-19, 25-12, 25-13).
Peyton Dincher had 20 points to lead the Millionaires while Belle Morrow and Pippy Kieser both ahd ten and Tanaya Holmes posted seven. Morrow had 18 kills and Libby Radspinner recorded 18 assists. Avani Rainier had seven kills and Geiani Whaley had six.
The Millionaires host nearby rival Loyalsock on Thursday in Williamsprot’s annual pink out game.
Central Mountain swept Danville in three sets, 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-10). The win kept Central Mountain’s standout season in tact as the Wildcats imrpove to 13-0 and close the regular season with undefeated state power West Branch on Monday. It will also serve as Central Mountain’s pink out and youth recognition night.
Wellsboro beat Northeast Bradford, 3-0 (25-4, 25-10, 25-8). Peyton Keane had 11 kills while Ellie Largey posted 15 assists. Wellsboro saw Maddy Cruttenden lead the team in both points (27) and digs (seven). Kendall Sweet had seven points and six digs and Blake Eckart had four digs.
North Penn-Liberty beat Cowanesque Valley, 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-7).
• In girls soccer, Muncy dominated Sullivan County, 11-0, scoring eight second-half goals. Ava Eyer scored four goals while Kiki Woodward had three. Woodward also had four assists as Muncy out-shot the Griffins, 26-5.
South Williamsport beat CMVT, 14-0, as Coco Kline had two goals and three assists and Ana Oeler and Kloey Persun both scored twice. Lily Brink, Althea Street, Ayla Minier, Addisyn Morrison, Lauren Bertrin, Eliana Gorsline, Abigail Holbrook and Annika Harding all had a goal as well in the rout.
Williamsport battled tough but lost on the road to Selinsgrove, 2-1. Deborah Shultz scored the Millionaires loan goal. McKylee Vollman played well in goal with 12 saves to keep Williamsport in the game.
Hughesville held just a two-goal lead through the first half but scored four in the second to put the game away in a 6-0 win against Southern Columbia. Kylie Temple and Katelyn Temple both scored twice while Jaysa Kiess and Regan Sellers found the back of the net as well.
Central Mountain battled tough but came up shy in a 2-0 loss against Shamokin. Shamokin struck twice in the first half, giving the Indians a 2-0 cushion that was enough to hold off the Wildcats. Central Mountain created several promising chances with multiple players testing the Shamokin goalie, but the finishing touched proved elusive. A few shots sailed high and a few went wide.
• Kai Wheeland and Mason Forer scored first half goals before Colton Barnes helped seal victory late, scoring off a Silas Boiywo assist as North Penn-Liberty defeated Towanda, 3-1. Deakon Valentine made eight saves in goal for North Penn-Liberty.
Wellsboro fell to Northeast Bradford, 2-0.
“We had 13 more shots on goal and increased our corner kicks by six compared to the first time we played,” Wellsboro coach Todd Fitch said. “We also reduced their opportunities at goal. They’re a good team and at the end of the game, we didn’t have the one stat we really wanted.”
Tyler Kuhn scored with 27 seconds remaining in the second half to put Northeast Bradford ahead, 2-1.
• The Lycoming College men’s soccer team fell 2-0 in a Landmark Conference matchup on the road against 15th-ranked University of Scranton. Scranton (8-0-3, 3-0) stayed unbeaten on the season, while Lycoming fell to 3-4-4, 0-1-2 in the Landmark.
The Royals took the lead early in the contest as Alex Kozdron scored an unassisted goal in just the fourth minute of the match. Scranton kept their one-score edge for most of the second half, as the Warriors fired off nine shots, including six after halftime, but none of them found the back of the net. The Royals added some insurance in the 76th minute when Rob Patrissi put one into goal.
Sophomore keeper Jace Bennett kept Lycoming in the game by earning a career-high nine saves.
• The Lycoming College women’s soccer team’s school-record 12-game winning streak came to an end with a 2-0 setback against the University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action. Scranton (8-2-2, 3-0-0) handed Lycoming (12-1, 2-1) its first loss since a 3-0 season-ending defeat in the final of the Landmark Conference Championship final on November 9, 2024.
The first half was scoreless as the Royals sent an eight shots towards goal, but the Warriors held firm, as senior keeper Riley Block picked up five saves.
• Junior Ella Scott finished second and junior Sydney Taylor took fourth to pace the Lycoming College women’s cross country team, which edged Penn College, 27-30, in a dual meet at the Penn College Earth Science Center.
Scott finished the 6K course in 27:28, just five seconds off the pace of medalist Alexis Durn of Penn College. Taylor crossed in 29:11, as the pair split up Durn, Elaina Brady and Ellie Miller, who finished 1-3-5 for the Wildcats.
The Warriors were able to clinch the meet, though, thanks to the next four Warrior finishers, with junior Anna Kauffman taking sixth (31:52), junior Ann-Marie McMurtrie in seventh (33:07), sophomore Emma Ashfield eighth (33:20) and junior Miya Knippenberg in ninth (33:42), as Lycoming’s five scoring runners came in second, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth while Penn College’s came i firs,t third, fifth, tenth and 11th.
On the men’s side, junior Avery Rosan led the team on the 8K course with a fifth-place finish in 32:07, while senior Kenny Draper, a Hughesville graduate, was right behind him in 32:10 to take sixth.
