Local roundup: South girls soccer earns 2-1 win against rival Loyalsock
South Williamsport won an exciting game over rival Loyalsock in girls soccer, 2-1, on Saturday morning. Madison Perry tied the game up in the first half, 1-1, but the Mounties scored the game-winner with four minutes left in regulation when Kloey Persun buried a free kick just outside the Loyalsock box.
Persun put South on top early, 1-0, when she scored off an Ella Moore assist. South’s Althea Street and Loyalsock’s Ava Deknecht both had seven saves for their respective schools.
Sammy Roarty found the back of the net twice as Milton defeated Central Mountain, 4-0. Kat Bennage and Lexi Bergey each scored goals while Hayden Snyder had two assists and Maeve Ficks and Roarty had assists.
Milton maintained pressure throughout the first half and the Wildcats held their defensive shape and batlted to stay in the game. The Black Panthers out-shot Central Mountain, 20-2.
Central Mountain honored Hall of Fame inductee Sara Hawksworth after the game. She was part of a dominant run for the Wildcats in the mid-2000s that included three league championships and an undefeated streak in league play that stretched across three consecutive seasons. In her senior year, CM fnished the season unbeaten before being narrowly upset in the district semifinals. She was 58-19-5 during four years.
North Penn-Mansfield improved to 7-6 by defeating Sullivan County, 6-2. Brooke Wilcox had another outstanding performance by scoring five goals to help Mansfield seal the win. The Tigers out-shot Sullivan, 17-8, as Mariah Hallabuck had 11 saves for the Griffins.
Chesney Fetzer had 15 saves, but Jersey Shore fell to Troy, 7-0. Saydie Renzo had three assists for Troy and Alexis McRoberts and Kylee Roy each had two goals and an assist.
• Montoursville erupted for four straight second-half goals, breaking a tie and defeating Southern Columbia, 5-1. Bryce Winslow scored the tie-breaking goal and finished with two as well as an assist on CJ Lucas’s game-opening goal. Quinn Winslow and Christian Berwanger also scored and Montoursville out-shot Southern, 16-3.
Wyatt Judge scored off a Adoniram Hill assist, helping Williamsport blank Athens, 1-0. Williamsport played excellent defense and limited Athens to just two shots.
Caleb Sweigart, Lucas King and Dominic Marotti all scored first-half goals, helping Sullivan County defeat Muncy, 3-1. Gannon Swank scored off a penalty kick for Muncy, pulling the Indians within two in the second half.
Lewisburg’s Keegan Crosby scored twice and Viktor Permyashkin had a goal and two assists as the Green Dragons blanked Cedar Cliff on the road, 5-0, to move to 14-0-1. Daedrian Campbell and Isaac Ayres both scored too as Dylan Vogel, Roan Beachy and Riley Gulden-Luthi had assists.
Lewisburg held just a 1-0 lead at the half before going off for four second-half goals to put the game away.
Jersey Shore blanked Troy, 3-0. Dylan Hensler had two goals and an assist for the Bulldogs to lead the offense. Tyler Beck scored the Bulldogs’s third goal, all three of which came in the first half. Ezra Paulhamus and Gabe Welshans both had assists.
Jersey Shore out-shot Troy, 14-5.
• Senior Christian Woobay connected on a penalty kick in the second half, but the Lycoming College men’s soccer team but settled for a draw, as Drew University tied the game in the 76th minute in a 1-1 Landmark Conference decision.
The first half was a scoreless stalemate as each team took five shots, three on goal, but nobody connected. After the intermission, though, the intensity heated up, leading to a hard foul in the box that led to the game’s first goal.
Lock Haven soared past California (Pa.) with an impressive 4-1 victory. Before the game, seniors Ryan Miller and Kevin Magallanes were honored as part of senior day.
The Bald Eagles improve to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play. The scoring started for the Bald Eagles after a 39th-minute goal from Noah Brady, assisted by Billy Lawrence.
Penn College picked up a point in the United East standings with a 0-0 draw against Notre Dame (Md.). Penn College fired off 15 shots with six on-goal while the Gators placed four of their 12 shots on frame, but they were all turned away by the opposing keepers in the deadlock.
Penn College held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks with all five coming in the second half. Hunter Gabloff, Mason Kostick, Elliott Rattiram and Logan Pietrzak all fired off two shots each while Justin Crismale registered his fifth shutout on the season.
Williamsport graduate Jimmy Pombor’s finish in a chaotic scene won the match in the dying seconds as the Bucknell men’s soccer team pulled out a 1-0 result over Army West Point.
Bucknell (6-2-3, 2-1-1 PL) won a corner late in the match with one final opportunity to find the back of the net after 89 scoreless minutes. Kasper Piela’s original ball into the box was cleared only to David Krumov, who quickly sent the ball back out wide.
Piela served in another ball, and Collin Sullivan leapt into action to get a touch. The ball fell right to Pombor who slotted in his first goal of the season.
• A pair of first-half goals set the pace as the Lycoming College women’s soccer team improved its program-record undefeated start to 12 wins with a 3-1 Landmark Conference victory over Drew.
The Warriors took the lead in the 8th minute when junior Ella Magee buried a free kick into the right side of the net, her conference-high 14th of the season, as she moved within three points of the single-season record of 40 set by Jordan Lazarich in 2016. At the 39th minute, the Warriors doubled the lead when junior Norah Mosley drilled a corner kick off the fingertips of the keeper and into the top right corner of the net for her fifth goal of the campaign, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead at the break.
Bucknell and Loyola played a tightly contested 90 minutes on Saturday at the Ridley Athletic Complex, and the two sides finished in a 0-0 draw to remain unbeaten in Patriot League play in women’s soccer. Both teams are now 1-0-3 in conference play and sit one point behind Colgate and Boston University for the top spot.
Bucknell continued its defensive resurgence, as its young back line conceded only five total shots and just two on frame against Loyola.
South Williamsport graduate Aleigha Rieppel assisted Olivia Hudson on a goal in the 73rd minute, helping the Lock Haven women’s soccer team earn a 1-1 tie against Shippensburg.
Penn College continued its regular season unbeaten treak to 36-straight games with a 4-0 victory against Notre Dame (Md.). The Wildcats moved to 3-0-0 in the United East, 10-0-2 overall. The Gators fell to 1-2-0, 2-7-0.
Sara Darlington netted her second consecutive hat-trick with a pair of first-half goals in the 21st minute and 26th minute while Sierra Klinger found the senior forward on both goals. Brooke Klinger scored in the 23rd minute as the Wildcats held a 3-0 lead at the half.
• The Mansfield Mountaineers sprint football team pitched a shutout in a 31-0 home victory against Caldwell. This marks the first Mansfield (2-0) shutout since Oct. 15 of 2022. The Mountaineer defense was relentless coming away with three sacks, two interceptions, and had five fourth down stops. Jackson Taylor led with 10 tackles and a sack. Ian Mapp and Jack Burbage had 1.5 sacks a piece. Matt Machmer and Antonio Green Jr. each collected their second interception in as many weeks.
Marcus Quaker led the offense accounting for 190 yards of total offense and four total touchdowns. Quaker had 113 yards on the ground with three scores and 77 yards through the air with a touchdown and an interception.
The Cougars (1-2) got the ball first and drove down the field, until Machmer plucked a pass out of the air at the three-yard line, for his second interception of the year.
Mansfield responded with an eight play 37-yard drive that was all running plays. Quaker punched it in from five yards out for the Mounties to go up 7-0.
• Freshman Laurel Fite scored in the third quarter to highlight the day for the Lycoming College field hockey team, which fell to Drew University, 3-1.
Senior Isabella Bobe posted 17 saves to move within eight of reaching the 500-save mark in her career, notching 10 in the second half for the Warriors (6-3 overall, 0-1 Landmark).
Mansfield (4-6, 1-2 PSAC) completed their season sweep over Frostburg State with this PSAC contest serving as the Mounties first conference victory of the season, winning 5-3.
Jenna Duke picked up her third career hat trick for Mansfield and now has ten goals on the season, with her first goal starting off the game in the first quarter, with an assist from Kiley Stoltzfus.
• The Lycoming College volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-16) to Drew University in a Landmark Conference match, but bounced back to sweep CCNY, 25-16, 25-16, 25-17, in a non-conference match to split a pair of matches.
Lycoming (10-8, 0-2) was unable to pick up their first conference win over Drew (4-12, 1-1), but have now secured sweeps in each of their last three non-conference matches with the victory over CCNY (3-11).
The CCNY match saw the Warriors go on a 9-0 run to break open an 11-11 tie in the first set, a 12-0 run early in the second set, and finish the third and final set on a 17-7 tear after CCNY took the lead early on.
In the second match, freshman Kamryn Skeith led the way with nine kills, 14 assists, and three aces, freshman Emi Wenger and freshman Charlene Petreshock each had eight kills, freshman Gabrielle VonStein racked up 11 digs, and junior Haley Balgavy tallied 11 assists and three aces, while the Warriors hit a robust .363 as a team.
Lock Haven’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to Shepherd, winning the third set before losing a close 25-22 fourth set. Lola Coulter led Lock Haven with 18 kills.
Penn College picked up its first United East Conference victory at Valley Forge. The Wildcats swept the match in three sets, improved its conference record to 1-2, 4-15 overall. The Patriots dropped to 0-3 UE, 5-7 overall.
Penn College earned set victories of 25-12, 25-15, 25-19 to pick up the win. In the first set, the Wildcats strung together two seven-point runs to lead 19-5 while a Valley Forge error gave the Wildcats their set-clinching 25th point.
• Freshman Tre Lesperance moved seven spots up the leaderboard in a field of 57 golfers to lead the Lycoming College golf team, which set a program record with a round of 304 at the DeSales Fall Invitational at the par-72, 6,517-yard Olde Homestead Golf Club.
The Warriors finished the two-day tournament in ninth place, moving ahead of Muhlenberg on the second day of the tournament. Albright claimed the team title with a 17-over-par 593 at the tournament.
Lesperance shot an even-par 72 on the second day to finish five-over par at 149 (77-72). He had 14 pars, two bogeys and birdies on the par-4, 368-yard No. 10 and the par-5, 531-yard No. 12.
Junior Connor Shanahan and freshman Hill Meserve were each 3-over-par with 75s and junior Will Eberz rounded out the scoring four with an 82, shooting an even-par 36 on the back nine. Freshman Ryan Ault, a Jersey Shore graduate, added a 14-over-par 86.
