Montgomery boys beat South 5-1 in season finale at home

Montgomery’s boys soccer team closed out the regular season on Thursday with a 5-1 win against South Williamsport. The win moves the Red Raiders to 11-7 and the 11 wins ties a program record since bringing the program back in 2020.

“We had a great environment for our final home game for the seniors. It was a pink out, the Montgomery High School band was playing and we had great support from the community, which is always appreciated,” Montgomery assistant coach Doug Rife said.

Montgomery opened the scoring early when Dylan Sherman chipped the South goalkeeper on an assist by Camden Dalrymple. It was then senior captain Cameron Wilver’s turn to find the net as he blasted a direct kick over the keeper from around 30 yards out to put Montgomery ahead, 2-0.

Sherman recorded his second goal on an assist from senior midfielder Porter Hall. The Mounties would not go down easily, however, as Gavin Freas scored to bring the score to 3-1 with momentum building. Sherman was fouled in the box and earned himself a penalty kick. He converted it to complete the hat trick. The goal also marked his 25th of the season.

Wilver finished the scoring on an assist from Sherman to end the game, 5-1.

“Wilver stepped up and played a great match scoring twice. his brother, Justin Figard, played a very solid match on defense,” Rife said. “Dalrymple and Hall each recorded assists. It was awesome to see the seniors take advantage of the opportunity to play under the lights for the final time in Montgomery.”
