Muncy PPG–27.0, PPA–12.3; YPG–285.7, YPA–189
Muncy notes: Muncy (4-2) is hoping to bounce back after Montgomery snapped its four-game winning streak last Friday. The Indians are 3-0 on the road and have allowed just 26 points in four wins, shutting out two opponents. Muncy has adapted well to its new offense this season and first-time starting quarterback Andrew Walters is closing in on a 1,000-yard season. Four receivers have caught at least 14 passes and Nate Rogers is fourth among area players with 26 catches. Walters threw for 215 yards against Montgomery but the Indians were unable to get their running game going. They also failed to score on three different trips inside the 25-yard line. The Indians are third in the District 4 Class A standings and would head to Montgomery for the semifinals if the current seeds hold after Week 10. Junior lineman Nixon Lamper is having an excellent season on both sides of the ball and had 10 tackles against Montgomery. Lamper in tackles per game (7) and tackles for loss (8). Linebacker Jaxson Thomas also is playing well and the secondary has been one of the area’s best. Lineman Nassir Miller is building off the strong play he displayed in last year’s postseason and has six tackles for loss.
Muncy Player to watch–Gavin Barrows: The senior wide receiver played a super game against Montgomery, catching a career-high eight passes for 87 yards and a touchdown. Barrows caught a 34-yard scoring strike from Walters, catching the pass between two defenders and holding on while being hit. He also is part of that strong secondary and has an interception.
NP-Mansfield PPG–18.8, PPA–25.7; YPG–237.5, YPA–296.2
NP-Mansfield notes: North Penn-Mansfield (4-2) won its first four games but has struggled the past two weeks, being mercy-ruled by halftime both times. Still, the Panthers already have exceeded last year’s win total and are firmly in Class AA playoff contention. A year after earning all-state honors at wide receiver, Luke Kreger has become one of the area’s premier running backs and led the area in rushing through four games. He also has returned a kickoff and punt for touchdowns, while intercepting three passes. Colton Pellett returned kickoffs for scores against Canton and Athens in consecutive weeks, while making a fabulous hustle play which turned the Canton game around after he raced from behind and forced a fumble at the 1-yard line. Charles Aumick intercepted two passes in that win at Canton as the Panthers erased a 14-10 fourth quarter deficit. The previous week, Kreger’s last-second touchdown broke a tie and lifted North Penn-Mansfield to an exciting win against Towanda. Lineman Raiden Wimpelberg made a big play in that game, stopping a Canton drive with an interception.
NP-Mansfield Player to watch–Skyler Everetts: The senior linebacker is one of the team’s top tacklers the past two seasons and also starts up front on the offensive line. Everetts made at least nine tackles in each of North Penn-Mansfield’s wins, including a season-high 11 at Sayre.
Outlook: Both teams are eager to rinse out the bad tastes from their mouths after last week. Two determined teams going at it could make for an exciting game, but Muncy enters as the favorite here.
