Shamokin at Williamsport preview

MARK NANCE/ Sun-Gazette Correspondent Tevin Williams has totaled ten touchdowns over the last two weeks and threw for more than 300 yards against Jersey Shore in Week 6.

Shamokin PPG–45.0, PPA–17.2; YPG–371, YPA–209.5

Shamokin notes: Shamokin (6-0) has clinched a share of the HAC-I championship and can win it outright for a second straight year if it wins tonight. The Indians have won 16 straight regular season games and overpowered Selinsgrove, 57-12 last week. Jersey Shore is the only team which has given Shamokin a scare this season, the Indians rallying to win in double overtime. The defending District 4 Class AAAA champions held Selinsgrove to 156 yards, many of those coming late against the reserves. Logan Steele has returned two interceptions for touchdowns and Colin Steinhart another for a score. Za’ken Clinton has three sacks and is an excellent fullback who is on pace for a second straight 1,000-yard season. Steele is one of the district’s top dual threat quarterbacks, running for 12 touchdowns after nearly throwing for 2,000 yards as a sophomore last fall. Jayce Ginck went over 1,200 rushing yards a year ago and caught two passes for 63 yards and two touchdowns against Selinsgrove. He had a monster game in last year’s 28-16 win against Williamsport, running for 222 yards. As a team, Shamokin ran for 415 yards in that victory.

Shamokin Player to watch–Ryan Bickert: The junior running back is a big-play threat who changed the complexion of the Jersey Shore game when he returned the second-half kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown after Shamokin trailed 21-7 at halftime. He helps in all facets, also running for two touchdowns, producing a sack, as well as an interception and three tackles for loss.

Williamsport PPG–30.7, PPA–25.3; YPG–332.3, YPA–378

Williamsport notes: Williamsport (4-2) dropped to second in the District 2-4 Class 6A standings following last week’s 67-40 loss against Jersey Shore. The defending champions trail Wilkes-Barre but the top two seeds will host semifinals, so Williamsport controls its destiny there. The defense has struggled the last three weeks and allowed 687 yards against Jersey Shore. The Millionaires have had their most difficulty slowing the run, surrendering 796 yards the past two games. Still, the team has some exciting playmakers, including linebackers Lucas Naughton and Anthony Manley who both average more than 15 tackles per game. Manley returned from injury last week and collected a sack. Sophomore Davahjei Dymeck averages 10 tackles per game and had 12 each in wins against Central Mountain and Selinsgrove. Fellow sophomore Tevin Williams has been brilliant the last two weeks, igniting a furious fourth quarter comeback against Selinsgrove before totaling 445 yards and six touchdowns against Jersey Shore. Williams also has interceptions in consecutive games and has totaled 10 touchdowns the past two games. Giovanni White is another big-play threat, scoring touchdowns three ways and running for 201 yards with three touchdowns in a win against Hazleton. Ashton Thomas is coming on as well and caught an 86-yard touchdown last week.

Williamsport Player to watch–Trey Damschroder: The junior wide receiver was a force against Jersey Shore, catching six passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns. Damschroder scored on plays of 70, 64 and 37 yards. He also returned an interception for a score against Central Mountain.

Outlook: Williamsport displayed its firepower last week, but needs to find a way to slow down Shamokin’s powerful offense to have any kind of shot tonight. If they cannot contain the running game, it could be a long night.
