South duo, Hughesville’s Randall reach District 4 singles semifinals

The area had success on Saturday morning at Williamsport during the District 4 girls tennis singles tournament. The first three rounds were played on Saturday as three area girls tennis players reached Monday’s semifinals.

The semifinals are set for Monday at 1 p.m. at the Central PA Tennis Center with the finals to follow.

Top-seeded Josie Bendle of Danville easily advanced to the semifinals. The Danville singles player earned a 6-0, 6-0 win in the second round after receiving a first-round bye against Muncy’s Zoe Dohl before then posting a 6-1, 6-0 win against Hughesville’s Rebecca Roberts to advance to the semifinals.

She will face South Williamsport’s Mylee Morrison, who advanced thanks to three wins on Saturday. Morrison earned a first-round win over Central Columbia’s Cassandra Marte, 6-0, 6-1 before then upsetting fifth-seeded Days Weis of Lewisburg, 6-0, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, Morrison defeated Montgomery’s Madisyn Miller, 6-0, 6-2, to advance. Miller reached the quarterfinals after beating Selisngrove’s Alexis Hoot, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round and upsetting fourth-seeded Caroline Crawford of Loyalsock in the second round in a very close matchup, 6-4, 6-4.

Second-seeded Georgia Randall of Hughesville reached the semifinals as well, but had to battle in the quarterfinals to get there. After earning a first-round bye, Randall defeated north Penn-Liberty’s Annabella Johns, 6-0, 6-0 to set a matchup with Danville’S Gyovanna Sundaresan. The Danville singles standout earned a 6-1 first-set win and forced Randall to play from behind. Randall secured a 6-3 second-set win and earned a third-set 6-3 victory to advance.

The Spartan will face South Williamsport’s Emma McLaughlin in the semifinals. McLaughlin, had a first-round bye as the sixth seed and defeated Central Colubmia’s Sydney Barry in the second round, 6-1, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, McLaughlin beat Montgomery’s Cali Barnes, the third seed, in a tight matchup, 6-3, 6-3.

Barnes had a second-round win against Jersey Shore’s Julia Herman, 6-0, 6-2. Herman defeated Lewisburg’s Christina Zheng, 6-0, 6-4, in the first round. Barry earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mifflinburg’s Holly Swartz in the first round.

Seventh-seeded Gia Biacchi of Loyalsock beat Milton’s Emma King in the first round, 6-4, 6-2, before falling to Sundaresan, 6-2, 6-2. Sundaresan won against Wellsboro’s Evelyn Weatherbee in the first round, 6-0, 6-0. Johns beat Bloomsburg’s Suhani Vishakarma, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round before a loss to Randall.

Other area players on Saturday who competed included Jersey Shore’s Josie Gerst, who beat Wellsboro’s Olivia Gage in the first round, 6-3, 6-3 before dropping a 7-5, 6-1 match to Roberts of Hughesville. Roberts beat Milton’s Emily Waltman in the first round, 6-0, 7-6. Montoursville’s Elsa Kehrer lost to Dohl of Muncy in the first round, 6-4, 6-2.

Morrison or McLaughlin will look to be South Williamsport’s first District 4 singles champion since two-time state champion Olivia Dorner won four in a row from 2018-21. Randall could extend Hughesville’s streak to three straight District 4 singles titles with a win on Monday as Sarah Buck won the last two titles for Hughesville. Bendle is looking to become the Ironmen’s first District 4 singles champion since Michelle Wood in 2003.
