South, Muncy girls lead Class A field as districts get underway

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Muncy’s girls soccer players react after scoring a goal during a game against South Williamsport earlier this year. The Indians and Mounties are both in the District 4 Class A playoffs as districts gets underway this afternoon.

CLASS A

Look at the bracket in Class A, and you’ll see Muncy and South Williamsport on opposite sides of the bracket meaning an anticipated rematch of last year’s District 4 Class A championship game is possible, but South coach Marc Lovecchio and Muncy coach Jason Gresh have their teams focused at the team at hand and not looking down the road and wondering ‘what if?’

For South, that team at hand is Northumberland Christian and for Muncy, the Indians have a matchup with East Juniata.

The Mounties have caught fire at the right time late in the year. The team had a rough 1-3 start to the year, but righted the ship from there and have lost just one game since then toward an 11-4-3 record. Ella Moore has once again led the offense with a team-high 15 goals while dishing out seven assists. Moore has played more of a defensive role this year, however, and helped solidify the defense. Sophomores Coco Kline, Kloey Persun and Ana Oeler have stepped up as Kline has 12 goals and eight assists, Persun has 12 goals and an impressive 20 assists and Oeler has 11 goals and six assists. South’s offense has been playing well together with that standout foursome up top and a great defense anchored in goal by senior Althea Street who has 34 shutouts for her career.

And speaking of outstanding offenses, take a glance at Muncy. The Indians have scored 93 goals this year with Ava Eyer having scored 30 with nine assists, freshman Kiki Woodward posting 28 goals and nine assists and senior Ella Nagel scoring 12 goals and a team-high 24 assists. Defenses know that trio has to be contained, but that’s easier said than done.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Montoursville’s girls soccer team made a late-season push to qualify for districts and are hoping to make a run in Class AA.

Eva Nagel has stepped up in goal this year as a sophomore as well with 66 saves as she has 14 wins to her name. East Juniata will have a tough time against Muncy.

Montgomery’s girls soccer team is playoff bound for a second consecutive year thanks to the offensive combination of sophomore Addisyn Grimm (19 goals, seven assists), freshman Miranda Staggert (12 goals, six assists) and senior Lily Muhl (nine goals). In addition, Aleaha Grimm has eight goals and four assists and Zoe Furman has six goals and four assists.

Montgomery is in for a tough test though having to face top-seeded Southern Columbia. The Tigers have five players with at least 10 goals in Kenadie Reamer (16 goals, five assists), Kailee Helwig (15 goals, 18 assists), Olivia Jones (11 goals, seven assists), Alyssa Conner (11 goals, five assists) and Macie Swank (10 goals, eight assists). Isabella Snyder, a freshman, has 11 assists, showcasing the depth the offense has for Southern. The Tigers also have a standout keeper in sophomore Sierra Martino who has 82 saves this year with four shutouts.

PREDICTIONS–QUARTERFINALS: Southern def. Montgomery; South def. Northumberland Christian; Muncy def. East Juniata; Line Mountain def. Wyalusing. SEMIFINALS: South Williamsport def. Southern; Muncy def. Line Mountain. FINAL: Muncy def. South Williamsport.

CLASS AA

DAVE KENNEDY/Sun-Gazette Kylie Temple of Hughesville keeps pace with Linah van Emrik of Williamsport compete during a game this year. The Spartans (Class AA) and Millionaires (District 2-4 Class AAAA) are both in the playoffs in their respective classes.

Let me know if you’ve heard this before in the last few years: the playoffs are getting underway and Central Columbia’s girls soccer team is the top seed in Class AA. Sound familiar? Well like the last few years, that’s the case yet again in 2025.

The Blue Jays are 15-3 and earned the top seed and will once again be the team to beat in Class AA. Central Columbia graduated a talented senior class but have an outstanding duo of Joey Devlin and Quinlan Blake who have combined for an outstanding 64 goals and 37 assists with Devlin having scored 33 goals with 20 assists. Teams know they have to limit those two standout players, but their skill is too much to contain most of the time.

In goal, Braelyn Moran, a junior, has yielded just 15 goals all year while recording 60 saves with seven shutouts.

Hughesville is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and the Spartans are hoping to once again reach the district championship game. Hughesville’s offense goes through the Temple sisters, two speedsters who can get open and make plays happen. Katelyn Temple has 22 goals and seven assists Kylie Temple has 12 goals and 12 assists. Kylie Temple, a defending state champion in track and field in the 300 hurdles, has speed that allows her to get past a lot of the best defenders in the district. Elizabeth Wolfe also has an impressive 17 assists to go with eight goals.

The Spartans have played well from a defensive perspective this year as well too and make life tough for forwards.

Montoursville has a quarterfinal matchup with Warrior Run. The two played late in the regular season and drew to a scoreless draw in an exciting double overtime game. Those two should put on another great game in the playoffs.

Kenna Bennett has helped shore up and anchor the defense while sister Khaya Bennett is a threat up top to score. Abby Strassner has been good this year in goal as well and the Warriors have been playing great late in the year at the perfect time to enter the playoffs with momentum.

Warrior Ru is led by Sierra Dunkleberger’s 17 goals, Maura Woland’s 12 goals and Katie Zaktansky’s 10 goals and 12 assists. While that trio is tough to defend, Montoursville held them without a goal in their late-season matchup.

North Penn-Mansfield is playoff bound for the first time since 2013 and coach Maryann Wilcox and her players are more than happy to be playing in late October. Brooke Wilcox has an outstanding 39 goals this year and has been a focal point of Mansfield’s offense.

Mansfield faces Midd-West in the first round. The Mustangs don’t have a go-to scorer, but rather a handful of players who can put in goals as seven players have at least two goals. The Mustangs know they have to try and limit Wilcox if they want to advance.

Wellsboro will face Williamson in the first round in an NTL battle. Haylie Smith, a freshman, leads Wellsboro with eight goals and Ella Boyce has six.

Lewisburg plays Bloomsburg on the road in the first round. Kate Batkowski is the team’s leading goal scorer with 10 goals while Laurel Boyer has six and Ava Satteson has five, as does Kinlee Lytle. Gabby Kashi has been having a standout freshman season as she leads Bloomsburg with 13 goals while junior Hannah Magill and sophomore Rori Serrano have nine goals apiece.

PREDICTIONS–FIRST ROUND: Lewisburg def. Bloomsburg; Wellsboro def. Williamson; Midd-West def. N.P.-Mansfield. QUARTERFINALS: Central Columbia def. Lewisburg; Montoursville def. Warrior Run; Hughesville def. Wellsboro; Troy def. Midd-West. SEMIFINALS: Central Columbia def. Montoursville; Hughesville def. Troy. FINAL: Central Columbia def. Hughesville.

CLASS AAA

Shikellamy is 16-2 this year and are looking to win their fourth consecutive District 4 championship this season, which would be the first four-peat in program history. Only South Williamsport and Hughesville have handed Shikellamy losses so far this year.

The Braves are led by senior standout Jillian Deivert who has an outstanding 35 goals scored with 10 assists. The Braves have five great scoring threats with Kaci Grimm (17 goals, 10 assists), Lauryn Ross (16 goals, eight assists), Maggie Benner (10 goals, nine assists) and Lily Persing (six goals, 22 assists) able to score. Add in Alyssa Williams (eight goals), and the Braves are tough to defend.

The Braves face Athens in the semifinals. Athens has struggled defensively, having allowed 28 goals this year, and the Wildcats’ defense will need to play outstanding to limit the Braves.

Milton is looking to avenge last year’s semifinal loss and reach its first district championship game since 2008 (Class AA). This is the Black Panthers second year competing at the Class AAA level.

Sammy Roarty has been key for Milton’s offense as she has 23 goals this year — 78 for her career — and Kat Bennage has added 13, creating a nice offensive duo. Maeve Ficks is also playing solid as she has 10 goals scored and Olivia Heise enters districts with eight, meaning Milton has plenty of players who can find the back of the net.

The Black Panthers face Selinsgrove, a team entering districts with 14 wins and a trio of talented scorers. Madison Merrel (26 goals, 14 assists), Addison Wenzel (21 goals, nine assists) and Joslyn Zacharda (10 goals, 10 assists) have combined for 57 goals and 33 assists.

PREDICTIONS–SEMIFINALS: Shikellamy def. Athens; Milton def. Selinsgrove. FINAL: Shikellamy def. Milton.

DISTRICT 2-4 CLASS AAAA

Williamsport enters as the No. 2 seed after going 8-9-1 and are behind only Wilkes-Barre Area (14-4) in the Class AAAA standings and Williamsport will play at Balls Mills on Saturday at a time to be announced in the semifinals.

The girls have found their stride late with success, and getting Deborah Shultz back in the lineup was a big boost for the offense. Shultz and Jaelynn Helmrich are a potent 1-2 duo for the Millionaires up top.

Williamsport’s boys team fell in the District 2-4 Class AAAA quarterfinals last year to Wilkes-Barre area and have not reached a district final since 2020.

Shultz has 14 goals with seven assists and leads the team in goals despite missing four games and Loisa Hofstrom has 10 goals with seven assists. Helmrich has a team-high nine assists and broke the school record this year and has eight goals as well.

The Williamsport girls lost a heartbreaker last year in the District 2-4 Class AAAA championship game to Wilkes-Barre Area, 1-0, the second straight season falling in the final by just one goal.
