Local roundup: LHU men defeat West Virginia Wesleyan 68-67
Dean Coleman-Newsome made a layup as time closed to zero to lift the Lock Haven men’s basketball team to a thrilling 68-67 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on the final day of the Atlantic Region Challenge on Saturday.
With the victory, Lock Haven improves to 1-1, while WVW falls to 0-2. Trailing 67-66 with 14 seconds to go, Coleman-Newsome went one-on-one straight to the cup and kissed it off the glass for the game-winning basket to propel the Bald Eagles to their first victory of the season.
Luke Kennevan led all scorers with 17 points on 8-of-12 shots from the floor and added a team-high seven rebounds. Keith Warren finished with 14 points, while Dyllon Scott led the second unit with 13 points and five rebounds.
Coleman-Newsome and Blake Deegan both finished with a pair of steals. In the first half, West Virginia Wesleyan led 12-2 in points-off-turnovers to carry a 41-37 lead into the break.
However, Lock Haven opened the second half on an 8-2 run to take a 43-41 lead with just under 19 minutes to go.
Mansfield (0-2) competed against Virginia Union University (1-1) in the final day of the Ron Wilson Classic for a final score of 75-51.
Juju Pagan lead the Mountaineers with 11 points and five rebounds. Diarmid Stewart tied Pagan for the lead with 11 points and five rebounds as well. Virginia Union applied consistent pressure throughout the first half, balancing long drives with solid defensive stands.
Mansfield responded with a handful of timely plays but couldn’t maintain momentum. The Panthers took advantage of multiple scoring opportunities to widen the gap, to led 29-15 at halftime.
• The Lock Haven women’s basketball team wrapped up its weekend at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference vs. Mountain East Conference Challenge by taking on the host Concord as LHU fell, 77-68.
Alana Robinson led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-19 shots from the floor. The senior also blocked two shots. Madeline Evans secured her second straight double-double to open the season, finishing with 16 points, 14 rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Jenadia Jordan chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while Rhlyn Rouse also added eight rebounds. Sydney Lear led the second unit with 10 points in 18 minutes.
After a 17-17 first period, Lock Haven outscored Concord 18-11 in the second to lead by seven points heading into the break. However, Concord outscored The Haven 49-33 in the second half, behind five triples and 14 free throws in the final quarter, to come from behind to steal the victory.
Neither team shot above 40 percent from the floor, but Concord made up the difference in scoring by leading 8-2 in shots made from behind the arch. Lock Haven knocked down just 2-of-14 shots from deep and 26-of-41 shots at the foul line.
Mansfield team (1-1) faced off in non-conference action against the Livingstone College Blue Bears (0-2), where the Mountaineers took the win in a final score of 84-79.
Katie Sheeler led with 28 points, five steals and two assists. KJ Gordon collected 19 points and nine rebounds on the night. Both teams went started strong trading buckets, ending the first quarter with the Livingstone up 19-11.
Mansfield lowered the deficit to only nine points with five minutes to remain in the second. The Mounties finished the half, going on an 8-6 run to cut the lead down to 30-24.
• The Lock Haven women’s volleyball team closed its season beating the West Chester Golden Rams 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-12) in a PSAC match. The Bald Eagles finish the season 10-18, and 6-8 in PSAC East play. This season marks the first time since 2015 the Bald Eagles had six or more wins in conference play.
Lock Haven led in each category, such as kills (43-33), assists (42-29), and blocks (7-6) on the way to the win.
Leading the charge for Lock Haven was Lola Coulter with a team-high 13 kills, with Maddie Mitchell adding nine of her own.
Madelyn Wagner and Gabby Gealey combined to dish out 40 assists, with Olivia Taylor setting up two of her own. Gracelynn Wolzen led the match with three aces for The Haven.
