Lyco’s Johnson earns 2nd Athlete of the Week award
For the second time in as many Lycoming College football games, sophomore Khalil Johnson has earned the Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week award.
Johnson had eight tackles and a hand in two turnovers in Lycoming’s 24-16 win over Juniata in the regular-season finale. He had a fumble recovery at the Lycoming three-yard line to prevent Juniata from gaining a two-score lead in the second quarter.
In the fourth quarter, he read a screen pass and laid out a Juniata running back for a four-yard loss on third down before intercepting the pass on the next play to end Juniata’s final drive. He also had a quarterback hurry in the game.
In eight games this season, Johnson is fourth on the team with 53 tackles and second with nine tackles for loss.
This is the third time that Johnson has earned the weekly award, as he picked it up on Nov. 3 after posting 13 tackles, two for loss in a 38-12 win over Catholic and also won the award on Nov. 5, 2024.
This is the fourth game in a row that the Warriors earned a conference plaudit, after Johnson’s award on Nov. 3, sophomore Joe Lyons III and sophomore Daniel Atsou earning the Offensive and Defensive Athlete honors on Oct. 27 and first year Yahseam Stokes and senior Ryan Pentz, a Central Mountain graduate, earning Defensive and Specialist of the Week honors on Oct. 20. Earlier in the season, junior Terrence Oliver earned Offensive Athlete of the Week on Sept. 22 and Oct. 7 and freshman Christon Mitchell-Brown was Defensive Athlete of the Week on Oct. 7.
