Muncy girls soccer team wants to keep postseason run going

When Muncy’s players walked off the field at Shikellamy on Tuesday evening following a 3-0 win against York Catholic, the Indian players were excited and cheered, but they weren’t overly ecstatic.

They just won the program’s first-ever state playoff game — and did so emphatically with a 3-0 shutout — but they weren’t satisfied with their effort or performance.

The players felt they could have done things better, they could have played tighter in the first half and made better passes.

So, while Tuesday’s win was great, Muncy’s players aren’t simply happy with just winning that game. They want to keep this postseason run going even further.

“They’re not content, you can see it. The fact they acted when they came off the field, they weren’t happy with their performance tonight. A 3-0 win in state playoffs most people are extremely happy about and they’re not, they’re not happy and there’s some things we can do to get better,” Muncy coach Jason Gresh said. “That just shows there’s fire in the belly, which is all you can ask.”

And having a fire in their belly and motivation to compete at a high level has the team motivated. And Muncy (19-2-1) will take that fire into Saturday against District 11 champion Schuylkill Haven (17-5-1) at Central Columbia at 2 p.m..

The matchup pits two top-10 teams in the state against one another as Muncy is ranked No. 6 in the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association’s latest poll and Schuylkill Haven is ranked No. 10.

Muncy knows the games only get tougher the further you go in the postseason. Schuylkill Haven showed how capable of a team they are by cruising past District 2 champion Holy Redeemer in a rout, 7-0, on Tuesday in the first round of the PIAA Class A tournament.

“At the end of the day, this is the time of year where you just win and advance, that’s all it is,” Gresh said. “Absolutely unbelievable (to advance to quarterfinals). What a group of girls.”

Muncy senior standout Ella Nagel noted that the team may have some nerves, but they want to keep this run going, plain and simple.

“There’s nerves, but we just want to keep moving forward from here,” Nagel said.

Schuylkill Haven is a team that mirrors Muncy in many ways. Both teams have offenses which have scored 100 or more goals, and both defenses are solid. Schuylkill Haven has allowed just 16 goals the entire season and Muncy has yielded 28.

Schuylkill Haven entered the playoffs by finishing second in the Schuylkill County Division 4 with a 10-0-1 record and the Hurricanes are riding a seven-game winning streak. Since falling 2-0 to Schuylkill Valley at the end of September, the Hurricanes have allowed just two goals over the past seven games and have outscored their opponents in that span, 34-2.

Muncy knows the competition will be tough, but Muncy’s back line has played with confidence the entire postseason and keeper Eva Nagel continues to play well and gains confidence with each win. Nagel has posted ten shutouts this year, most in the area, and had two shutouts in districts and one in states.

“She makes it look effortless and I think that speaks volumes of her confidence and her ability,” Gresh said about Nagel’s play after Tuesday’s 3-0 win vs. York Catholic. “It doesn’t matter how much pressure, how many shots or where the shots are from. She has played that scenario out in her head and played it almost perfectly.”

Muncy has made history this year multiple times. It far surpassed the previous record for most wins in a single season (15), it won the program’s first District 4 championship for boys or girls soccer, and Tuesday marked the program’s first-ever state playoff victory.

The Indians are hoping to keep adding to this historic run on Saturday.
