Muncy’s defense is just as solid as potent offense

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Southern Columbia's Lola Cecco (5) and Muncy's Kiki Woodward (1) try to win the ball during the District 4 Class A championship game at Milton on Saturday.

When you have an outstanding offense, that’s what grabs the attention. Especially more so when you feature two players with 30 or more goals in a season.

But the offense, while outstanding, is only part of Muncy’s success this year. Just as importantly, perhaps even more, is just how talented the Indians’ back line is. Muncy has a group of defenders who rotate in and out and keep Muncy’s defense stout each game.

That group consists of Rachel Paulhamus, Kyra Creasey, Mikaila Ganoe, Emma McCormick, Lexi McKeta and Katie Shipton.

“We’re really strong. Not really anyone is able to score, we barely let up any goals this year,” McCormick said. “We know that if one person’s back there, we know we don’t have to track back as fast because we know our defense is able to get there.”

That was evident in Saturday’s District 4 Class A championship game. The Indians shut out an outstanding Southern Columbia team who had a number of players who could score and change the dynamic of a game like Kennadie Reamer or Bella Snyder. Instead, Muncy blanked the Tigers, 1-0.

“It gives us a lot of confidence (beating Southern). We know we’re capable of doing a lot more than in beginning of the season,” McCormick said. “We know we can do it now.”

Muncy’s defense will look to keep up its solid efforts against York Catholic in today’s PIAA Class A girls soccer playoff game at Shikellamy at 5 p.m.

From back to front, Muncy has a talented team with no weak links. That back line plays great, Eva Nagel is a talented goalie who keeps improving each game and up top there’s numerous strikers who can score such as Ella Nagel, Kiki Woodward and Ava Eyer.

“There isn’t (a weak link),” McCormick said. “Our midfield, our strikers, our keeper, our defense. Just all combined all together we have so much confidence as one team.”

Ella Nagel, who scored the game’s only goal off a penalty kick against Southern, reiterated how good the defense is and how much confidence the back line gives the entire team.

“We knew who (Southern’s) strong forwards were and we knew we had just a strong defense having our No. 15 in the back (McKeta). She’s been a really strong defender that we had,” Ella Nagel said. “We knew she could shut a lot of things down and we played defensively in that aspect. But we knew we had strong girls up the middle and playing offensively to our two amazing strikers. We knew if we could play together, we could get that win.”

“I honestly think it’s such a big thing,” sophomore Eva Nagel added. “We’re all so close as a team and all of our seniors, this is just like huge to us.”
