Troy cruises past Wellsboro in district playoffs in football

A 35-point first half helped Troy, the defending state champions, pull away from Wellsboro in the first round of the District 4 Class AA playoffs on Friday night in Troy.

After Griffin Morral put Wellsboro ahead with a 73-yard touchdown run with 9:44 to play 8-0, Troy responded by scoring 49 unanswered points.

Mason Smith had a 36-yard touchdown run with 5:32 to play in the first quarter tied the game at 8-all before Brendan Gilliland punched in a one-yard score with 52 seconds left in the first to give Troy the lead.

In the second quarter, Gilliland broke a 60-yard run before Smith had back-to-back touchdown scores of 24 and 56 yards.

Smith ended with 155 yards and four touchdowns for Troy while Gilliland ran it 10 times for 92 yards and two scores. Kael Millard had 51 rushing yards.

Griffin Morral led Welslboro with 105 rushing yards and a touchdown while also throwing for 127.
