Area has success on first day of Top Hat Tournament at Williamsport
The Top Best Memorial Top Hat Tournament began with the first two rounds of competition on Friday at Williamsport’s Magic Dome.
Williamsport’s Jordan Piselli reached the 114-pound championship quarterfinals. After a first-round bye, the junior picked up a pinfall victory in 1:48 over Conestoga Valley’s Brady Bowman. Central Mountain’s Angelo Tarantella, a freshman, lost in the second round at 114 to South Western’s Cole Franks by decision, 5-4.
Central Mountain’s Gavin Heverly, a junior, is in the championship quarterfinals at 121 thanks to a 18-2, 2:20 tech fall against Jersey Shore’s Gabriel Fisher, a freshman. The loss dropped Fisher into the consolation bracket.
At 127, Central Mountain’s Collin Bauman earned a 59-second fall over Halifax’s John Taucher in the championship bracket to advance to today’s quarterfinals. Jersey Shore’s Draylen Phillips fell to Mifflinburg’s Jack Gramly in the second round by fall in 46 seconds.
At 133, Central Mountain’s Patrick Tarantella, a junior, reached the quarterfinals after a dominant 18-1, 2:57 tech fall victory against Titusville’s Andrew Donaldson in the second round.
At 139, Williamsport’s Lauger Waldman, a junior, secured a fall in 3:22 against Hempfield’s Dominic Woods in the second round. Central Mountain’s Hayes Donley, a sophomore, lost by fall to Clearfield’s Bryndin Chamberlain in 2:26.
Loyalsock’s Ivan Baker advanced to the championship quarterfinals in the 145 bracket thanks to posting a fall in 3:36 against Central Mountain’s Alton Counsil. Central Mountain’s Aiden Kunes, a junior, advanced to the championship quarterfinals witha 22-4, 2:00 tech fall win over Central York’s Alex Engleman.
The Lancers saw Kayden Keefer, a senior, also advance to the quarterfinals at 152 thanks to back-to-back wins on Friday. In the first round, Keefer beat Hempfield’s David Reese by tech fall, 17-1, 3:04. In the second round, Keefer picked up a fall over Williamsport’s Austin Dunlap in 1:20. Jersey Shore’s Louden Spotts, a sophomore, advanced to the quarterfinals by pinning South Western’s Compton Speck in 1:59.
Williamsport’s Alex Wright was pinned in the first round in the 152 bracket by Taylor Rohn of Saucon Valley in 2:34.
At 160, Williamsport’s Jahki Burget was pinned by Derry’s Ewan Olson in 1:40 in the second round. Burget earned a pin in 1:38 over Daniel Boone’s Ryan Moyer in the first round. Jersey Shore’s Tobias Morgret defeated Central Mountain’s Dakoda Packer via major decision, 18-5, before Morgret lost to Connellsville’s Jake Lilley by tech fall, 20-4, 3:31.
Central Mountain’s Dalton McDermott advanced to the quarterfinals with a 15-0, 5:10 tech fall win against South Western’s Carter Gordon in the second round at 172.
Williamsport’s Jackson Raker had a first-round bye at 189 and picked up an 8-1 decision win in the 189 bracket over Jersey Shore’s Riley Kanski, a senior. Kanaski beat Mid Valley Secondary Charter’s Eric Melesky by fall, 2:58.
Central Mountain’s Todd Caris, a sophomore, picked up consecutive falls at 215 to get to the quarterfinals. The Wildcat pinned Williamsport’s Brayden Harpster in 39 seconds in the first round and then secured a fall in 2:29 against Hazleton’s Landon Bodnar. Loyalsock’s Tristna Van Fleet, a freshman, reached the second round with a narrow 5-3 decision win over Hempfield’s Braylon Owens. Van Fleet then was pinned by Line Mountain’s jacob Schwalm in 1:31 to fall into the consolation bracket.
At 285, Central Mountain’s Hayes Henry, a sophomore, had a first-round bye and advanced to the quarterfinals by pinning Connellsville’s Roghan Hollis, a senior, in 3:55.
