Hughesville had a pair of swimmers compete at a meet at Danville featuring the Ironmen and Mount Carmel, as both swam in two individual events.
In the girls 100 fly, Hughesville’s Ashlynn Barlett swam a time of 1:10.66. Barlett would swim a time of 1:18.14 while competing in the girls 100 breast.
Evelyn Meckbach competed in two events, swimming a time of 1:04.57 in the girls 100 free and then a time of 1:16.80 six events later in the girls 100 back.
Independent swimmer’s times don’t count toward finishes in dual or tri-meet results, but rather toward seeding and qualifications for districts.
• South Williamsport secured a narrow 39-33 win over Benton in boys wrestling on Thursday night. The Mounties saw a string of four consecutive falls by Louis Mazzullo (152 pounds) over Daniel Sleiman, Cade Lusk (160) over Ryder Wilson, Jayden Hamm (172) against Colton Smith and Cole Gerber (189) against Brady Thomas.
The Mounties’ Taylor Naugle beat Gunner Sternhagen at 133 to open the dual with a 6-4 SV-1 decision victory.
Benton’s Korben Collae (107) and Kaleb Collae (114) earned consecutive falls at 107 and 114 against the Mounties.
North Penn-Liberty used a string of seven consecutive bouts picking up six points at each from 114 through 152 to earn a 53-23 win against Wellsboro. After three forfeits from 114-127, the Mounties had four consecutive bouts won by fall. Aivan Whitteker (133) pinned Connor Linden in 1:44 at 133, Logan Bitner pinned Vaughn Shannon in 1:03 at 139, Jonah Neill pinned Kaynn Holler in 58 seconds at 145 and at 152, Liberty’s Bentley Chilson pinned Mason Abplanalp with two seconds remaining in the first period.
Wellsboro’s Wyatt Kilburn earned a 23-7, 4:30 tech fall win at 189 over Wyatt Nybeck. At 215, Welslboro’s Hayden Stevens pinned Gavin Stubblefield in 1:45.
In boys’ basketball, Jason Harer continued his strong week, collecting his second double-double as North Penn-Mansfield defeated Canton, 42-26. Harer scored 12 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and added five assists. Andy Hermansen added 12 points as the Tigers (3-1) won their second straight. Ryder Route scored 11 points for Canton.
Four players scored in double figures and Wellsboro broke things open quick as it defeated Williamson, 85-11. Ransom Schultz scored a career-high 16 points, Jonathan Carl 15 and Marek Mascho and Griffin Morral 10 each as the Hornets won their third straight game. Wellsboro (3-2) led 31-3 after the first quarter and 57-9 at halftime.
Conner Lewis scored 11 points and Brody Grinnell eight, but North Penn-Liberty struggled to keep up with undefeated Towanda in a 61-37 loss. The Black Knights, coached by Hughesville graduate Landon Henry, improved to 7-0 and broke things open with a 25-15 third quarter run.
