Jersey Shore hoping for more District 4 medalists

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Jersey Shore’s Reese Charney competes in last year’s 50 free. Charney graduated, leaving big shoes to fill for Jersey Shore.

For the last four years at Jersey Shore, Reese Charney has been a key member of the Bulldogs swim team, picking up key points in duals or tri-meets and invitationals. Not to mention she also ha quite a few silver and gold district medals in her collection and trips to Bucknell or the state meet.

Charney graduated, meaning Jersey Shore will need to look to other swimmers to step up in her absence and help guide the Bulldogs. Thankfully for Jersey Shore, there’s quite a few returners back who can do just that as Jersey Shore will hope for yet another successful season in the pool.

Charney took district gold last year in the 100 back in 59.25, winning that event by more than three seconds over teammate Kate Butzler (1:02.47). Shore’s Macy Wilton took sixth in 1:08.17 in the event as well. Charney took gold in the 50 free last year in 24.85, winning that event by almost a second over Athens’ Evelyn Panek. Wilton also took seventh in the 100 fly last year in 1:09.66.

Butzler was a silver medalist last year in the 200 free with a time of 2:03.07, less than half a second behind gold medalist Samantha Fagan of Bloomsburg.

Butzler also graduated after an outstanding four-year career with the Bulldogs and is another tough hole for Shore to fill.

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Jersey Shore graduated state medalist Reese Charney, but returns Lila Nestlerode (pictured) who experienced districts last year. The Bulldogs have a number of district qualifiers back this season in Brooke Charney, Macy Wilton, Makayla Wrench, Aaralynn Kimble, Rhian Prowell, Sierra Derr, Nestlerode, Jayden Passetti, Addison Miller and Alaina Samar.

While Butzler and Reese Charney are gone, another Charney is still on the team in her sister Brooke, who was a seventh-place finisher last winter in the 50 free in 26.82. She was less than a second from being a top-4 finisher last year as well and has only gotten better in the offseason with practice.

Brooke Charney was part of Shore’s gold-medal winning 200 medley relay team alongside Kimble, who was a freshman last year. Kimble had success from the get go and also took fourth place in the 100 free at districts in 57.17 and was just 0.60 seconds from taking bronze as Athens’ Evelyn Panek swam a 56.57 for third. Kimble took bronze in the 100 fly last year in 1:04.26 and was two seconds behind Danville’s Izzy Marks (1:02.80) as Lewisburg’s Emma Hopkinson took gold in 59.98.

Makayla Wrench returns as well for Shore, a swimmer who got valuable experience at districts. Wrench was a 13th-place finisher in the 100 free with a time of 1:03.29 and teammate Rhian Prowell took 15th in the event in 1:06.99. Wrench swam in the 50 free last year at districts as well and took 16th (28.86). Teammate Sierra Derr was a 15th-place finisher in 28.74.

Another swimmer who’s back with experience is Lila Nestlerode, an eighth-place finisher in the 200 IM.

Nestlerode, Wilton, Wrench and Brooke Charney were all part of the Bulldogs’ 200 free relay team which finished in sixth last year at districts in 1:51.28.

Addison Miller was an alternate last year for the Bulldogs’ 200 free relay team which took fifth, as was Alaina Samar. Both return.

On the boys side, the Bulldogs have all four members of its 200 free relay team returning. Ezra Paulhamus, Nathan Grant and Nathan Klugh were all freshmen while Jayden Passetti was a junior. That trio being just freshman and shaving five seconds off their PR is a huge confidence booster and valuable experience going into their sophomore seasons.

Passetti swam in the 50 free. In the 100 breast, Passetti took fourth thanks to swimming a time of 1:06.82.
