Local roundup: Muncy boys win NPL Tournament Championship

Muncy used a dominant second quarter run and stellar defense to propel it to a fourth straight North Penn-Liberty Tournament championship as it defeated rival St. John Neumann, 52-33. The Indians (8-3) broke open a close game with a 25-3 second quarter eruption which gave them a 26-point halftime lead. Jaxton Frantz earned Tournament MVP honors and scored 11 points, while all-tournament selection Dominic Guardini scored a team-high 12.

Jeremain Morgan added eight points off the bench and Muncy surrendered just 19 points through three quarters a day after Neumann scored 75 in a semifinal win. Jahki Brister scored 13 points for the Knights (3-5).

Parker Bennett scored a season-high 28 points and Greg Drake played his best high school game, scoring a career-high 16 as Montgomery pulled away late and defeated Millville, 66-54. Drake drained three 3-pointers at crucial times and helped Montgomery built a 33-21 halftime lead. Bennett scored seven of his 21 points in the fourth quarter when the Red Raiders closed on an 18-10 run. Damaj Stewart-Williams added 10 points for Montgomery.

Sullivan County dropped a thriller at home in overtime to Lourdes by a point, 46-45. Lourdes forced overtime thanks to outscoring the Griffins by six in the fourth quarter.

Dom Marotti had a team-high 13 points for the Griffins while Cayden Smithkors scored eight and Jaiden Moore, Lucas King and Tucker Blasi all chipped in seven. Moore had eight rebounds.

Brighton Scicchitano hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left in overtime to seal the win.

North Penn-Liberty held Meadowbrook Christian scoreless in the second and too just four in the third as the Mounties built a lead they didn’t relinquish en route to a 50-24 victory.

Evan McTish led the Mounties wtih 17 points while Landon Mattern scored nine and Conner Lewis scored eight. Luke Kreger had an impressive six steals to go with five assists and four rebounds while McTish led North Penn-Liberty with seven rebounds.

• Kayleigh Sheleman had a big night, scoring a season-high 23 points and adding seven rebounds as Montoursville defeated Meadowbrook Christian, 50-31 and captured the Dionna Satteson Tournament championship at Montgomery. Sheleman earned Tournament MVP honors and Marleigh Bainbridge scored 10 points, made seven steals and grabbed five rebounds. Emily George had seven points, six steals, six assists and five boards as Montoursville (5-3) won its fourth straight game, building a 27-12 halftime lead.

Muncy played its most complete game this season and made an early-season statement, going on the road and thumping Line Mountain, 48-23. The Indians improved to 6-0 and handed Line Mountain just its second loss in eight games as Ava Eyer produced a double-double with 16 points, 16 rebounds and seven steals. The Indians built a 28-9 halftime lead and Emma McCormick scored 12 points, while Rosie Zalonis added nine with both making three steals. Alexis McKeta grabbed nine rebounds and Muncy allowed more than six points in a quarter just once, surrendering only nine field goals.

Lewisburg fell to Saint Hubert Catholic, 43-29, to drop to 3-3. Lewisburg saw India Walker score 10 points to lead LEwisburg, which was held to six first-quarter points and five second-quarter points. The Green Dragons were limited to single digits each of the first three quarters. Walker had six rebounds and four steals while Lauren Schwartz and Teagan Osunde had eight rebounds and Kennedy North grabbed seven.

Luciana D’Andrea scored 27 points to lead Saint Hubert Catholic while Reagan Moore added eight.

Lewisburg’s Ava Motto and Walker were named to the Warrior Run all-tournament team.

After falling behind by nine in the first quarter, Wellsboro played well defensively and limited Coudersport to 13 points the final three quarters en route to a 33-26 win.

Ady Frantz led the Green Hornets with 17 points.

At the Canton Christmas Tournament championship, Canton secured a 43-35 win against North Penn-Liberty. Haley Litzelman had a 24-point, eight-rebound, four-assist, two-steal performance to lead the Mounties while Kendall Graham had seven points and Victoria McTish had eight rebounds. Cailyn VanNoy scored 20 for Canton while Stella Rockwell scored 12.

Litzelman, who scored her 1,000th point in her previous game, made the Canton All-Tournament team.

• The Lock Haven women's wrestling team traveled to Evanston, Illinois, to compete in the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern. The field consisted of 18 schools along with many unattached wrestlers.

Lock Haven was led by Presley McCandlish (160 pounds), who took fourth place. McCandlish won three matches on the day with a pin, a tech fall and a decision.

Lindsay Laws (207) placed sixth by picking up two tech falls.

Freshman Journie Rodriguez (117) picked up three wins for the Bald Eagles, all via tech fall and placed sixth.

Isabella DeVito (131) scored a pin and a tech fall while finishing 2-2 on the day.

Charlotte Gilfoil (138) picked up a pin, Azariah Moore (180) and Williamsport graduate Marissa Rumsey (145) both picked up a tech fall and Anna Lackey (110) picked up a win via default.
