Local roundup: Muncy’s boys basketball defeats Bucktail 78-45

Muncy scored 47 points in the second half to pull away from Bucktail en route to a 78-45 win as the Indians improved to 6-2.

Jaxton Frantz had a big game for Muncy with 24 points while Nixon Lamper scored 10 while Carter Feigles, Kyran Lisembee and Jermain Morgan all added eight.

Muncy led just 17-12 after the first quarter and held a 31-21 lead at the break. But a 23-point third and 24-point fourth helped Muncy separate itself and secure a victory.

Bucktail was led by a pair of double-digit scorers in Gavin Pick (19) and Corbin Pentz (15).

Warrior Run defeated South Williamsport, 82-38. Warrior Run saw five players reach double figures in the lopsided win. Carter Sheesley scored 17, Landon Polcyn scored 14, Ethan Balzer scored 13, Aiden McKee had 12 and James Keifer added 11. The Mounties were led by Andrew Walter’s nine and Levi Butler’s eight.

Lewisburg hung with Southern Columbia early, but the Green Dragons were held to just 15 second-half points as the Tigers pulled away for a 65-54 win. Cooper Mowry scored 18 points for the Green Dragons as he sank a team-high six 3-pointers. Leon Tucker II and Nazir Meredith each scored 11 points.

Southern was led by Braydon Griscaage’s 17, Jace Malakoski’s 15 and Ben Gehret’s 14.

Alex Schultz scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while dealing three assists, helping short-handed Hughesville win at Milton, 51-37. Gavin Knarr scored a game-high 17 points and added five rebounds and two steals. Evan Mackenzie scored 11 points and seven rebounds.The Spartans (3-4) were playing without two starters and received a huge lift from freshmen Julian Smith and Everett Shaner.

• In girls basketball, Warrior Run’s offense struggled as Williamsport scored double digits in three of the four quarters to defeat the Defenders, 44-11. Laylah Martin led Williamsport with nine points, Kinsley Cannode scored eight and Jaelynn Helmrich and Zaelana Minor both scored nine.

Lewisburg defeated Selinsgrove, 43-25. Lewisburg was led by a pair of double-figure scorers in Ava Motto (14 points and India Walker (10). Addy Barner added eight. Walker nearly had a double-double with eight rebounds. Lewisburg’s Elliana Rupert, Kennedy North and Barner all had six rebounds.

Kameron Lightner had a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double with four steals and three blocks as North Penn-Mansfield defeated NTL foe Wellsboro, 44-27. Maddie McNamara had 16 points, a team-high seven steals, six rebounds and four assists while Julia Kaczynski had 10 points and Emmi Route scored four.

St. John Neumann girls’ won their first game, playing outstanding defense and overcoming a second-half deficit to defeat rival Montgomery, 24-21. The Knights were down one at halftime but went ahead in the third via a 9-5 run. Neumann never allowed more than six points in a quarter as Bre Nixon scored seven points and Savana Smith six. Aubrey Hetner had six points for Montgomery and Rihanna Arredondo and Gabriella Hill five each.

• Muncy’s boys wrestling team beat Bloomsburg, 51-24. Muncy used a string of three consecutive first-period pins from 121 pounds through 133 to pile up 18 points and, coupled with 12 at 107 and 114 thanks to forfeits and another fourfeit at 139 for six points, took a fast 36-0 lead.

Roman Maiorana (121) pinned Jake Keller in 55 seconds, Gage Swank (127) needed just 31 seconds to pin Shiloh Welsh and at 133, Kase Snyder pinned JD Klingerman in 1:23.

Muncy’s Chase Boozer had a 7-0 decision win vs. Alex Billmeyer at 145. Muncy’s Liam Driscoll pinned Spencer Sink at 189 in 4:15.

Lewisburg cruised past Wellsboro, 54-16. Bentley Chappell needed just 55 seconds to pin Connor Linden at 127 pounds and at 139, Landon Michaels pinned Kaynan Holler in 35 seconds. Nolan Altoft pinned Vaughn Shannon at 133 in 1:22. Lewisburg also saw Ben Barbella secure a fall — his coming in 1:40 — at 145 over Mason Abplanalp.

Wellsboor’s Wyatt Kilburn won at 189 wtih a fall over Lennon Barner in 5:20 and at 215, Wellsboro’s Hayden Stevens pinned Hunter Hollenbach in 1:37.
