Loyalsock boys rally for big win at Danville
Brecken Gusick scored a career-high 21 points and Loyalsock turned a one-point halftime deficit into a 62-51 win at two-time defending District 4 Class AAAA champion Danville. The Lancers (2-1) turned the game around with a 21-7 third quarter run. Isaac Blackwell and Jalil Coates each scored 10 for Loyalsock and Saoj Jones and Braydon Cioffi had eight each.
Parker Bennett scored 14 points and both Damaj Stewart Williams and Ethan Tupper added nine as Montgomery held off a CMVT rally and won, 42-38. The Red Raiders built a 35-20 lead entering the fourth quarter and Bennett had eight points as Montgomery built a 10-point first quarter advantage.
Gavin Knarr scored 15 points, dealt four assists and made three steals in Hughesville’s 55-40 loss at Central Columbia. Alex Schultz had 11 points and seven rebounds, while Jonah Heiney scored seven points. The Spartans built a 25-23 halftime lead before Central rallied in the second half.
Ashtyn Burdick scored 13 points, dealt five assists and made four steals in Cowanesque Valley’s 67-34 loss at defending District 4 Class AAA champion Troy. Levi Stahli dealt five assists, and Josh Teague had seven points with six rebounds.
In girls’ basketball, Montgomery opened its season with a hard-fought 39-36 win against Montgomery. Five freshman played significant minutes, and Paige Winters scored 16 points as Montgomery heated up after the game was tied, 12-12 at halftime. Six players scored for the Red Raiders and Rihanna Arrendondo added nine points.
Starr Ordway scored 12 points and Jaylynn Anderson seven, but Troy made eight 3-pointers and defeated Cowanesque Valley, 60-23.
