Loyalsock boys win sixth straight; defeat rival Neumann
Jalil Coates picked up where left off Friday, scoring 25 points Monday night against rival St. John Neumann while helping lead a balanced offense as Loyalsock won its sixth straight game, 72-54. Coates has 53 points in his last two games and was part of a balanced offense which included Braydon Cioffi (19) and Brecken Gusick (16) combining for 35 points. The Lancers built a 41-28 halftime lead and put the game away in the fourth quarter. Daiton Thompson had a strong game for Neumann, equaling Coates for game-high honors with 25 points. Kane Meixel had a career-high 10 and Legend Dillard and Jahki Brister nine each.
Gavin Knarr scored a career-high 29 points and Alex Schultz collected his second straight double-double, helping Hughesville defeat Montgomery, 56-44 in the Bill Babcock Christmas Tournament semifinals. Knarr made four steals, and Schultz had 14 points and 15 rebounds. Hughesville will play Mount Carmel in Tuesday’s championship and pulled away in the second half after Montgomery trailed 24-23 at halftime. Montgomery plays Towanda, coached by Hughesville graduate Landon Henry, in the consolation game. Parker Bennett scored 20 points and Damaj Stewart Williams 12.
Jaxton Frantz had a big night, scoring a career-high 32 points, but Muncy could not overcome an eight-point fourth quarter deficit in a 58-56 loss at Susquenita. Frantz helped Muncy build a 22-10 first quarter lead but Susquenita went ahead with a 20-4 third quarter run. Dominic Guardini had 12 rebounds and four assists for Muncy, while Kyran Lisembee made four steals.
Lewisburg used excellent balance to defeat Pottsville Nativity, 69-50 as four players reached double figures. Rebira Jemana led the way with 15 points, while Cooper Mowry had 13, Cortland Michaels 12 and Nazir Meredith 10. The Green Dragons built a 22-point lead entering the fourth quarter.
Montoursville seniors Kayleigh Sheleman and Emily George had big nights, helping the Warriors produce an impressive 50-28 win at South Williamsport in girls’ basketball action. Sheleman produced her second straight double-double with a game-high 17 points and 15 rebounds, while George had 15 points and eight steals. Dahlia Campbell was strong on the boards with 10 rebounds and Marleigh Bainbridge had seven to go with five steals. Carly Quimby scored nine points for South.
It was quite a sister act for the Zalonis family as Rosie and Anna combined for 35 points, helping Muncy defeat Bucktail, 50-28. Rosie Zalonis scored a career-high 22 points and made 8 of her last 9 foul shots in the fourth quarter. She also made seven steals. Teammate Kate Bryant added eight points, knocking down two treys, and the Green Hornet defense shined as it held Williamson to nine points through two. For the Warriors, Kenna Thomas led the way with 13 points.
Though Milton hung with Northeast Bradford initially, with the score deadlocked after one, it fell behind thanks to a four-point second quarter, never quite getting back into it as it fell by a score of 37-27. Liz Schrock and Hayden Snyder led the Black Panthers with eight apiece, and Carrie King added seven.
