PHOTO PROVIDED Montgomery's girls wrestling team took home the team title at the Hawkeye Holiday Tournament in Hanover over the weekend.

At the Hawkeye Holiday Tournament in girls wrestling at Hanover, Montgomery accrued 194 total team points to win the team title, winning by a 41-point margin of victory over runner-up Williamsport. In total, 32 teams were at the event.

All nine wrestlers from Montgomery won at least two matches with seven of the nine reaching the semifinals.

Montgomery had six wrestlers reach the finals in Brooke Knoebel (100 pounds), Jenna Houseknecht (112), Briella Walk (130), Zoe Furman (136), Georgina Leet (155) and Adelyn Rine (235). Knoebel won the title at 100 by winning against three ranked opponents. Houseknecht won the 112 title by pinning a ranked opponent in the finals and, at 136, Furman won the team title thanks to falls against two ranked wrestlers, one of which was a returning state fourth-place finisher.

Knoebel outworked Selinsgrove’s Aislynn Weller to win the title at 100 with a 13-7 decision victory. Houseknecht won at 112 thanks to securing a first-period pin against Mia Gifford of Western Wayne in 1:41. Furman and Northeast Bradford’s Anaiah Kolesar had a great battle at 136 as Furman secured the win in the third period in 4:54. Montgomery’s Georgina Leet lost at 155 to Abington Heights’ Hayden Manning via a forfeit win by Manning. At 235, Montgomery’s Adelyn Rine was pinned by Hazleton’s Evelyn Sheer in 2:48.

Williamsport saw a trio of wrestlers reach the championship finals with two taking home victories and titles. Danica Bacorn won at 106 for the Millionaires by beating Angelie Torres of J.P. McCaskey via major decision, 15-2. At 124, Lillian Rumsey of Williamsport beat Honesdale’s Saige Olver by major decision, 11-3. Williamsport’s Mia Davis lost at 190 in the finals to Central Columbia’s Morgan Reichard by fall in 2:40.

Williamsport’s Malania Comfort and Mykia Petruskevich were bronze medalists. Comfort beat Danville’s Juliet Steckley in the 100 third-place finals by fall in2 :34 and Petruskevich won at 130 with a pin against Wallenpaupack’s Alyna Atos in 2:32. Muncy’s Zoe Kunkle was also a third-place finisher as she earned a 13-2 major decision win at 118 against Emmersyn Seltzer of Crestwood.

Montgomery’s Malayna Beattie took fifth at 190 by beating Caitlin Luciano of Delaware Valley via forfeit. 

At 235, Muncy’s Sadie O’Dell finished fourth after she was pinned by Central Columbia’s Aubrey Edgar in 2:16.

In the championship semifinals, Knoebel pinned Comfort in the third period with 57 seconds remaining to advance to the championship. Bacorn earned a second-period pin in the 106 semifinals against Towanda’s Hailey Harbst. Houseknecht pinned Palmyra’s Genevieve Smiley in 41 seconds in the semifinals at 112.

At 118 in the semifinals, Muncy’s Kunkle lost in a tough matchup to Greater Nanticoke’s Emily Kivler via decision, 16-9. Rumsey earned a convincing tech fall win at 124 against Hazleton’s Valerie Bustillo, 19-3, 3:15. Walk beat Petruskevich in an all-area semifinal at 130 by decision in a tough battle, 6-1. Furman earned a 46-second pin against Crestwood’s Emma Selfe at 136.

Leet pinned CMVT’s Piper Reed in 2:43 at 155 and Davis of Williamsport secured a fall over Beattie of Montgomery in another all-area semi at 190 in 3:11. Rine of Montgomery pinned JP McCaskey’s Natasha Rodriguez in 2:58 at 235.

The Montgomery junior high team finished second out of 26 teams as Kylie Houseknecht (94), Hadley Heaster (120) and Willow Reynolds (131) all took home junior high titles at their respective weights
