Montoursville’s Harvey, Warrior Run’s Milheim, Wirnsberger claim King of the Mountain gold

RALPH WILSON/for The Express Warrior Run's Reagan Milheim wrestles Northampton's Gabriel Ballard at 160 for first place in the final rounds on the King of the Mountain high school boys wrestling tournament at Central Mountain on Saturday.

MILL HALL – It’s been quite a storied week for a storied area athlete.

On Tuesday night, Reagan Milheim posted career win No. 149 in a dual win against Benton to cement himself as the all-time wins leader at Warrior Run. Three days later, he became the first Defender to surpass 150 career wins. And over the weekend, he was named the top standout at a stacked tournament.

At Central Mountain’s King of the Mountain on Saturday, the 2024 state champion won his third straight title at the event in dominant fashion, posting four bonus-point victories in five bouts and defeating two wrestlers ranked Top 5 in the state. In the process, he was named the event’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

“It’s been a good week, honestly,” said Milheim while holding the handcrafted trophy representing the honor. “I’m just thankful for everything, my training partners. I’m just trying to enjoy my senior year, my last year, so might as well go out with a bang and do my best.”

“I think the most impressive thing watching him is the numbers aren’t what he’s chasing. He’s just trying to get better as a wrestler,” said Warrior Run head coach Jeremy Betz on Milheim. “He was excited for this competition, excited to challenge himself, and he was dominant in all his matches. So, it was fun to watch.”

RALPH WILSON/for The Express Montoursville's Gage Wentzel wrestles Warrior Run's Max Wimsberger at 172 for first place in the final rounds on the King of the Mountain high school boys wrestling tournament at Central Mountain on Saturday.

His effort headlined a strong weekend for the area, one which saw 13 athletes from Montoursville, Warrior Run and Central Mountain medal, six reach finals and four take home King of the Mountain gold. Joining him at the top of the podium were teammate Max Wirnsberger (172), Montoursville’s Hayden Harvey (189) and Central Mountain’s Aiden Kunes (145), who each weathered challenging brackets in their own right.

For Milheim, his road towards three straight golds turned treacherous with two wins to go. After tech falling his way to championship semis, the American commit would have to go through two top five, state-ranked opponents to finish the job.

However, with improved hand-fighting and the offensive dominance he’s displayed throughout his career, Milheim prevailed.

He racked up five takedowns through the final two periods to defeat No. 4 Gavin Ciampoli (Altoona) by 16-4 major decision. Then, against the top-ranked wrestler in Class AAA in Northampton’s Gabriel Ballard, Milheim posted a takedown in the first minute and another deep into the second period, winning the top two matchup by 7-2 decision.

“A big thing for me was controlling my nerves before a match and just being confident in myself. Another was controlling hand fights,” said Milheim when discussing his improvements. “Just collecting wrists, pressure forward and get some movement going.”

RALPH WILSON/for The Express Bellefonte's Jackson Long wrestles Montoursville's Hayden Harvey at 189 for first place in the final rounds on the King of the Mountain high school boys wrestling tournament at Central Mountain on Saturday.

It was an effort amplified by his teammate displaying similar success. Despite facing not one, but two wrestlers ranked No. 2 in the state, Wirnsberger – ranked No. 3 in the state in Class AA – relished the challenge on each occasion.

After defeating No. 13 Ben Catullo (Burell) by major decision, the two-time state medalist endured two grueling defensive duels, winning both in tiebreakers. He defeated bracket favorite, Class AAA No. 2 McKaden Speece (Wilson West Lawn) by 3-2 decision. Then, in his fifth career matchup against No. 2 Gage Wentzel (Montoursville) in the 172 final, he notched an escape with nine ticks to spare to win by 2-1 decision.

“For Max to stay focused through that, that’s a really good win,” said Betz on Wirnsberger. “Both those kids (Wirnsberger and Wentzel) wrestled a really clean match. Both were aggressive, and it was real, high-quality wrestling.”

For Montoursville, Harvey found a way to secure gold despite facing No. 2 Hunter Snyder (Greater Latrobe) in the 189 championship semifinals, a two-time state medalist coming off a PIAA bronze. In that match, he didn’t just prevail. He won in controlled fashion.

The Warrior looked off an early 3-0 deficit, tying the bout thanks to a Snyder violation and reversal before taking a lead he’d never lose deep in the period. From there, he’d post a seven-point move to close out the second, almost securing a pin, and close out the match with a 16-9 decision victory.

RALPH WILSON/for The Express Bellefonte's Jackson Long wrestles Montoursville's Hayden Harvey at 189 for first place in the final rounds on the King of the Mountain high school boys wrestling tournament at Central Mountain on Saturday.

The win was the high point of his golden run, one which was capped with a 5-2 decision over No. 18 Jackson Long (Bellefonte). Coming off a breakout sophomore campaign, it’s a win that indicates continued growth.

“I hope so, but I do love being the underdog,” said Harvey when asked if he feels like he’s on the brink of another breakout. “Having that mentality going into a match with nothing to lose, it’s just empowering when you go out there.”

Joining him in the finals were teammates Branden Eisenhour (107) and Wentzel, with both succumbed to tough matchups to close out strong runs.

After edging out No. 7 Luis Moya (Parkland) by 4-3 decision in championship semis, Eisenhour ran into one of the best wrestlers in the country in Chestnut Ridge’s Kooper Deputy. The Montoursville sophomore hung with Deputy – ranked No. 2 nationally – initially, even securing a takedown at the end of the first period to take a 4-3 lead into the second.

But Deputy got Eisenhour into a bad spot deep into that period and was ultimately able to secure a pin. Nonetheless, Eisenhour was more motivated by the loss than anything and hopes to improve so he has a better shot in a potential runback.

“I got too confident, took a bad shot and let him control the match,” said Eisenhour on the championship bout. “I was kind of on the edge the whole time, just need to work on circling and not letting him control me.”

The three Montoursville finalists were joined by freshman Blake Fry on the podium, who claimed seventh at 160 in his first crack of the event to help the team place in ninth. For Warrior Run, Noah Johnson (285) and Tyler Ulrich (189) reached their respective fifth-place bouts, with Johnson winning his to take fifth, as the team finished 15th out of 30 teams.
