Muncy’s Logan Diehl looks to build off last year’s successes
RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Logan Diehl competes in the in the boys 50 free during a meet last year at Williamsport. Diehl is Muncy’s only independent swimmer this year.
Muncy had one swimmer last year qualify for the district tournament in then-junior Logan Diehl. Now a senior, Diehl is hoping to once again get back and climb the podium in his final year competing in swimming for high school competition.
As a junior, Diehl had success at districts after competing all year independently.
The Muncy swimmer had a successful year and took a bronze medal home in the District 4 boys 500 free competition. in that event, Diehl shaved an impressive nine seconds off his time to finish in 5:24.18 for bronze and trailed only Lewisburg’s Colin Shannon (second, 4:58.63) and district champion Connor Morgan of Central Columbia (4:58.18).
Diehl reached the finals of the District 4 boys 200 free as well and came away with a fifth-place finish after swimming a time of 1:58.90, setting a PR in the process. He was behind only Athens’ Jacob Shores (fourth, 1:57.18), Danville’s Briar Treibly (third, 1:55.11), Lewisburg’s Colin Shannon (second, 1:50.84) and district champ Grayson Reck of Bloomsburg (1:48.62).
He also was a finalist in the
Diehl is motivated to once again set PRs and possibly best his bronze medal as well.
While Muncy has a sole swimmer on its team, Wellsboro has a handful of competitors returning and saw success in both boys and girls competition at districts last winter.
One of Wellsboro’s best finishes last year was by Matthew Robbins, a freshman who tied for third place in the 100 free in 52.25, shaving nearly a second off his time and tying with Athens’ Ronel Ankam. The duo were behind only Athens’ Eli Hicks (second, 50.19) and Mifflinburg’s Malachi Moyer (first, 48.71).
Robbins also was a third-place finisher in the 50 free with a time of 24.12 and was behind only Shamokin’s Oskar Moraski (second, 23.89) and district champion Hicks (22.38). Two bronze medals as a freshman is a huge confidence booster and helps give him motivation to get further up the podium this year.
On the girls side, Wellsboro saw Piper Anderegg, a freshman, take third in the 500 free with a time of 5:40.80, a five-second improvement on her seeded time. The only swimmers that swam faster than her were Danville’s Cleo Hummel (second, 5:40.79) and district champ Zoe Czech of Danville (5:40.34). Anderegg was also a fourth-place finisher in the 200 free by swimming a 2:05.56.
Being a freshman and having that success against standout swimmers from Danville in the 500 free and taking fourth in the 200 free only helps give Anderegg confidence this year knowing she can compete with talented swimmers in the district and reach the podium.
And she has two medals to prove it.
Wellsboro’s Makenna Robbins finished fifth in last year’s 200 IM competition with a time of 2:31.70. She also took a sixth-place medal home last year in the 100 breast with a time of 1:16.06. She was just a second behind Central Columbias Leyna Beishline who finished fifth.
Wyatt Sporer was a freshman for Welslboro last year and qualified in the 100 breast and shaved four seconds off his time by swimming a 1:13.55 in the first heat of the event.
