Smith breaks two Hughesville records as Spartans win at Shikellamy

Hughesville girls’ basketball has a new single-game scoring queen, and her name is Maddie Smith.

Smith erupted for a record 39 points Wednesday night, also setting a program record with seven 3-pointers as Hughesville defeated Shikellamy, 75-55. Smith has two of the three single-game highs in program history, scoring 35 last Monday.

Smith opened the game with 12 points in the first quarter and finished even strong, going for 16 as Hughesville (4-1) won its fourth straight game. Shikellamy’s Lily Fatool also dazzled, scoring 38 points. Kendall Hamm had 14 points for the Spartans, Kylie Temple 11 and Allyssa King seven.

Muncy put together a dominant first half and stayed undefeated with a 54-17 win at St. John Neumann. The Indians (4-0) built a 29-2 first quarter lead and were ahead, 47-12 at halftime. Ava Eyer scored 14 points, pulled down eight rebounds, dealt four assists and made four steals. Emma McCormick scored a career-high 13 points and Rosie Zalonis added 12 points with eight steals.

Ella Moore and Kloey Persun both reached career-highs and South Williamsport built a 35-point halftime lead on its way to defeating Montgomery, 65-19. The Mounties (5-1) won their third straight game and Moore scored 22 points with Persun adding 12. The Mounties led 38-3 at halftime and Moore scored 18 first-half points. Paige Winters scored eight points for Montgomery.

Eight players scored for Sullivan County as it won for the third time in four games, defeating CMVT, 42-10. Eva Fresno scored 14 points and Ansley Baldwin 13 for the Griffins who came out strong and scored 16 first quarter points.

Haley Litzelman scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked five shots but Towanda defeated North Penn-Liberty, 56-28. Serena Boiywo added five rebounds and Kendall Graham 7 points for the Mounties.

In boys’ basketball, Loyalsock allowed just 12 second half points and four players scored at least eight points as it defeated Central Mountain, 57-34 for its fourth straight win. Jalil Coates scored a game-high 15 points, Isaac Blackwell had 10, Brecken Gusick nine and Saoj Jones eight as the Lancers (4-1) outscored Central Mountain, 28-14 in the second half.

Three Jersey Shore players reached double figures, and Carson Watkins dealt five assists, helping the Bulldogs defeat Milton, 59-30. Breylan Guerrero scored a career-high 13 points and added three assists, while Ty McDermit had 12 points and Khani McCray 11 points with four steals. Watkins added five rebounds, and Luis Santos had 10 points for Milton.

The Williamsport wrestling team ran into a hot Selinsgrove squad and succumbed to the lofty foe, falling by a score of 58-16. The Seals won all eight weights from 121 to 172, all which produced five or more points. 

The Millionaires got multiple bonus-point wins in the light weights, with Gage Spagnuolo picking up a first-period pin and Jordan Piselli tech falling Selinsgrove's Colton Kratzer. Jackson Raker rounded out the team's victories at 189, tech falling Selinsgrove's Alex Modawar with just 15 seconds to go before the final buzzer.
