In its first home meet of the season, Williamsport’s boys and girls swim teams both saw success as the Millionaires swept the competition on Tuesday afternoon. The boys beat Wellsboro (102-45) and Lewisburg (110-18) while the girls won against Wellsboro, 118-33, and Lewisburg, 98-74.
Wellsboro’s boys team beat Lewisburg, 72-21, while Lewisburg girls team beat Wellsboro, 98-39.
“I thought the kids swam really well,” Williamsport coach Brett Johnson said.
Williamsport had a number of swimmers claim first-place finishes with Aviya Halstead and Kiley Persun on the girls side and Brady Ross, Cooper Allmaras, Max Fink and Evan Weaver on the boys side of things. Of those seven, Halstead, Ross and Allmaras all won two individual events.
“There’s some really good leadership with Cooper and Brady as far as two seniors. We were down today not having Evan Summers who’s away, and in the girls with Kylie and Miley (Johnson) and Annie (Ross) and Kyla (Becker), I could list them all,” Johnson said. “They are all swimming really well for this early in the season. I’m really happy about that. They’re looking really good.”

Just a few days after competing in Saturday’s Blue Jay Invitational at Bloomsburg University, Williamsport had strong performances both individually and in relay competition against a perennially tough Lewisburg program and the Green Hornets as well.
Halstead won the 200 free and 100 free, Ross won the 200 free and 100 back and Allmaras claimed wins in the 200 IM and 500 free.
“It’s a really good sign especially swimming in the Blue Jay two, three days ago and swimming against some of them and to see the kids,” Johnson said. “One of girls dropped nine seconds, another dropped three. So yeah, they bring good competition, they have some really good girls and they got a couple good boys. That competition is really good for our kids to drop some times.”
Allmaras’ 200 IM performance was an outstanding one in which he won the event by just 0.01 seconds in an extremely close and tight finish. Allmaras (2:19.89) edged out Lewisburg’s Colin Shannon, who took second in 2:12.90.
Persun and Lewisburg’s Claire Graver had a close race in the 500 free. Graver won in 5:46.17 as Persun touched the wall for second in 5:46.69.

“It’s nice to finally have the numbers that we do. We have a handful of freshman girls come up and with only one senior, it’s going to look a lot like this next year too,” Lewisburg coach Mason Weudeman said. “I’m just proud of the effort all around by everybody. Every body is working hard in practice and everything is starting to come together.”
Persun did pick up a win individually in the 50 free on Tuesday by swimming a 27.05 while Lewisburg’s Morgan Shannon took second in 27.57 and Wellsboro’s Piper Anderegg took third in 27.69.
Fink won the boys 50 free in 25.94, winning by 0.17 seconds over Wellsboro’s Max Mascho who took second. Weaver won the 100 breast in 1:10.50.
In total, Johnson was glad to see multiple swimmers pick up wins on Tuesday as seven Millionaires took first.
“That’s what I think is going on this year, it seems that everyone is stepping up,” Johnson said. “Some of the kids who last year were the seconds and thirds are now the firsts and seconds, so I think the team is really supporting each other and they’re swimming well right now.”

The Green Dragons saw Emma Hopkinson win two individual events, as did Graver. Hopkinson won the 100 fly with a time of 1:03.8, winning by just under three seconds over teammate Morgan Shannon. In the 200 IM, Hopkinson swam a 2:34.10 to win by five seconds over teammate Jillian Muchler. Muchler had an individual win in the 100 back by swimming a 1:08.60 while Williamsport’s Dylana Richards took second in 1:45.65.
Graver’s close finish in the 500 free wasn’t the only narrow victory for her. Graver also had a close win for the 100 breast in which the top 3 finishers were all within 0.42 seconds of one another. Graver won in 1:17.04 followed by Wellsboro’s Makenna Robbins (1:17.40) in second and Williamsport’s Annie Ross (1:17.46) in third.
Muchler won the 100 back for Lewisburg with a time of 1:08.60.
“They certainly help set the standard for our women’s team,” Wuedeman said of Hopkinson and Muchler. “Every body sees the work they put in and it’s nice to see it pay off for both of them.”
Lewisburg’s Colin Shannon won the 100 free.

Wuedeman was glad to see the Green Dragons swim well against a talented squad like Williamsport in their second meet of the season.
“I feel like any time you swim a class up it certainly helps because level of competition is higher,” Wuedeman said. “You have to push yourself more because you have that competitive edge, you want to win. To swim against a school with this type of size, it certainly pushes you to want to do your best.”
Wellsboro saw success with a number of top 3 finishers. Wellsboro’s Austin DeShazo swam a time of 1:10.06 to take a first-place finish home in the 100 fly, winning the event by 10 seconds over Alex Martyniuk of Williamsport.
Matthew Robbins of Wellsboor took second in the 200 free (2:03.90) and Max Mascho was a second-place finisher in the 50 free in 26.11 while Wellsboro’s Wyatt Sporer took third (26.32). Ethan Pollaro of Wellsboro took second in the 500 free.
Wellsboro’s top girls finisher was Makenna Robbins who swam a time of 1:17.40 to take second in the 100 breast, just 0.36 seconds behind first-place finisher Graver. Joelle Bull took third in the 200 free in 2:36.86 and Piper Anderegg was a third-place finsher in the 50 free with a time of 27.69. Anderegg also took third in the 500 free (6:13.51).

Hughesville had three swimmers compete on Tuesday at the tri-meet with Wellsboro and Lewisburg. Sophie Yoder swam a 3:31.01 in the 200 IM and a 1:43.99 in the 100 fly. Ashlynn Barlett swam a 29.25 in the 50 free and 1:19.04 in the 100 breast.
Evelynn Meckbach swam in two events as well, finishing in 29.42 in the 50 free and then 1:05.34 in the 100 free.
Independent swimmers’ times don’t count as finishes in meets or invitationals, but count toward qualifying for districts.
