Williamsport swimming does well all around in sweep of Holy Redeemer, DuBois

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Aviya Halstead competes in the 100 backstroke during a high school swim tri-meet on Saturday at Williamsport.

No matter the event, Williamsport seemed to be picking up first- and second-place finishes when the final results were read on the PA for those in attendance.

Of the 11 swimming events competed in, Williamsport claimed six victories and a relay win in girls competition. On the boys side, the Millionaires won six individual events and two relays. Add it all together, and it was a dominant performance by the Millionaires against Holy Redeemer and DuBois in a tri-meet on Saturday morning as Williamsport swept the competition.

On the girls side, Williamsport beat Holy Redeemer 132-36 and DuBois, 106-70. On the boys side, Williamsport beat Holy Redeemer 110-40 and DuBois, 107-38.

“I believe everyone was dropping time in events,” Williamsport’s Evan Weaver said.

“We are really solid as a team. It’s very encouraging (for the year),” Williamsport’s Aviya Halstead said.

And both Weaver and Halstead helped lead Williamsport’s respective squads.

Halstead won the 200 IM and 100 back for the Millionaires and was part of the 400 free relay team win took a first-place finish. Weaver won the 200 IM and 100 breast and helped both the 200 medley and 200 free relay teams take first.

Four Williamsport girls won an individual event while four boys won individual events. In total, including relays, 12 Williamsport swimmers were part of wins.

“Last year I believe we lost to Holy Redeemer and we were down our two best swimmers (today), but I’m glad that we were able to do so good,” Weaver said. “I don’t think we lost many events either.”

In the 200 IM, Weaver swam a time of 2:32.84 to win the event by nine seconds over DuBois Adam Drahushak. The two were close after the first split before Drahushak held a narrow lead after the second split by roughly two seconds. But the third split proved to be huge for Weaver where he swam a 40.65 and outswam Drahushak, who swam a 49.77 split.

In the 100 breast, Weaver swam a 1:09.54 and beat teammate Brian Love-Ritchey, who took second in 1:15.78. Weaver started the event strong and held the lead throughout. The Millionaires finished 1-2-3 in the event as Peter Michaluk took third in 1:19.70.

And for Weaver, both those wins were PRs for the season, not too much off his career PRs.

“I feel I did good. I got two PRs for the season and I’m looking to go lower,” Weaver said. “I have bigger goals.”

Max Fink was also a two-event boys winner. Fink swam a time of 2:07.42 in the 200 free to win the event over Holy Redeemer’s William Moller by six seconds. In the 100 free, Fink swam a solid time of 57.06 and was the lone swimmer of the 11 who competed to break a minute. He won by three seconds as DuBois’ Tyler Gartska took second in 1:00.16.

Love-Ritchey won the 100 fly after swimming a time of 1:05.75 and Cooper Allmaras won the 100 back by breaking a minute in the event with a time of 59.17, cruising in the event for a win by 12 seconds over teammate Nathaniel DePrenda (1:11.59).

Fink, Weaver, Love-Ritchey and Allmaras were all members of the 200 free and 200 medley relay teams which both secured first-place finishes.

Williamsport’s team of Alex Martyniuk, Peter Michaluk, Ryan Saxe and Aiden Li also won the 400 free relay to close out the tri-meet.

On the girls side, Halstead was one of two swimmers to win two individual events.

Halstead won the 200 IM with a time of 2:36.53 and secured a win by roughly 12 seconds over teammate Annie Ross. Halstead had a opening split of 31.98 and held the lead throughout the race.

While Halstead cruised in the 200 IM to an easy win, she had tough competition in the 100 back event. Against DuBois Olivia Imbrogno, the Millionaire swam great and had Imbrogno chasing her from the get go, but Halstead earned a narrow victory by just 0.20 seconds in 1:08.63.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Sarah Carothers competes in the 100 butterfly during a high school swim tri-meet on Saturday at Williamsport.

“I am really happy with how I swam. I’m very happy (to have three total wins),” Halstead said. “They (Holy Redeemer and DuBois) definitely have a lot of great swimmers.”

Kiley Persun also won two individual events for the Millionaires. Persun won the 200 free with a time of 2:09.01, beating teammate Addison Hill by just over eight seconds. Persun then won the 100 free thanks to being the lone swimmer in the event to crack a minute, swimming a 58.48 and winning by five seconds over Holy Redeemer’s Olivia Davis.

Persun and Halstead were both members of Williamsport’s 400 free relay team which won in the final girls event on Saturday.

That foursome of Persun, Ross, Miley Johnson and Halstead swam a 4:10.42 to win by 10 seconds over DuBois’ Ava Gressler, Madey Conner, Imbrogno and Jasmine Stevenson.

Persun had Williamsport off to a strong start to begin the event in the first 50 yards with a 28.60, leading by four seconds and by the time her split was over, Williamsport had a sub-minute time of 59.11 and was leading the race by seven seconds. The Millionaires kept it up with Ross and Johnson both swimming solid splits and Halstead anchored the team as the fourth swimmer and had a 1:00.79 for her split.

“I think I did pretty good though. The whole relay did really well,” Halstead said of her team’s effort.

Johnson won the 500 free individually with a time of 5:57.42, beating teammate Dylana Richards who finished second in 6:03.66. In the 100 breast, Ross swam a time of 1:17.93 to secure the win by winning by less than half a second over DuBois’ Izzy Hansley (1:18.49).

Halstead, Ross, Kyla Becker and Persun took second in the girls 200 medley relay with a of 2:08.12, just less than three seconds behind DuBois Imbrogno, Hanley, Stevenson and Madey Conner who took first in 2:05.82.

Williamsport’s Lynnae Campbell was a third-place finisher in the 100 free with a time of 1:05.16, behind Persun and Holy Redeemer’s Davis.

In the girls 200 free relay, Williamsport’s Becker, Campbell, Sarah Carothers and Addison Hill swam a 1:59.78 to take second, just three seconds behind DuBois’ Aliza Wolgang, Ava Gressler, Madey Conner and Stevenson. Hill was a third-place finisher individually in the 100 back in 1:15.22 and Becker took third in the 100 breast in 1:22.99.

Williamsport’s Alex Martyniuk was a third-place finisher in the boys 100 free in 1:00.51, less than half a second behind second-place finisher Gartska of DuBois in a tight race. Li took second in the 500 free with a time of 6:08.98 as DuBois’ Drahushak won in 5:47.90.
