Bonus points helps Montgomery cruise to 70-6 rout against Danville
MONTGOMERY — Montgomery’s philosophy on the mat is a simple: score bonus points. It’s what coach Denny Harer preaches to his wrestlers constantly. And not only do the Red Raiders listen, they go out and execute.
Against Danville on Tuesday in a home dual, Montgomery won all six contested bouts by either tech fall or pin, racking up bonus points and dominating against the Ironmen, 70-6, to remain undefeated at 19-0 this year.
“We preach score points,” Montgomery coach Denny Harer said. “Our guys go out and score points, and that’s what we like to see.”
“We’re solid all the way throughout,” Montgomery senior Brandt Harer added. “My dad says get the bonus points when you can, don’t give them up when you can. We just go out and believe in ourselves and that’s what we’ve been doing.”
Harer had the fastest match of the night at 145 pounds and dominated Danville’s Elijah Sherman with an 18-0, 42-second tech fall win for five points. The tech fall was Harer’s 19th consecutive win in that fashion as he’s dominated his opponents all year. It’s also his 87th win via tech fall in his career.
“I just want to make a mark on PA wrestling. I think that my goal is to go out and score as many points as possible and eventually they keep racking up,” Brandt Harer said. “That’s one of my goals this year is to get 100 tech falls, obviously win states again, but yeah, I just keep striving for those goals.”
Montgomery opened Tuesday’s dual with three consecutive wins via forfeit before Danville’s Ezeriah Tobias pinned Carter Finck o Montgomery at 127 in 3:10 to make it an 18-6 deficit. But from there, Montgomery kept cruising.
Carden Wagner had a 52-second pin at 133 over Donovan Sharpe. Wagner led 3-0 thanks to an early takedown in the first period and turned Sharpe as he rode them before finally being able to get a fall.
“He’s huge. He took a year off two years ago, really crucial key to our puzzle to the success on our team,” coach Harer said. “He keeps getting better every week, he’s fun to watch.”
Wagner is also ranked No. 22 in the state at his weight, one of numerous ranked wrestlers in the Red Raiders’ lineup.
“It’s awesome. He’s far from peaking,” coach Harer said of Wagner. “We take pride in peaking at the right time and it’s almost that time. The kids are getting better and that’s what we’re looking forward to.”
Montgomery’s AJ Kroft needed just 42 seconds at 139 to pin Zaynne Zutell before Harer’s dominating tech fall victory.
After a string of four consecutive forfeits from 152-189, Montgomery closed the dual with back-to-back wins.
At 215, Montgomery’s Evan Hugar competed against Aiden George of Danville. Hugar worked on top to take a 3-0 lead early in the first period and after a restart with George starting in the bottom position, Hugar was able to get George to his back, but time ran out before he could get a fall, but Hugar led 5-0.
In the second period, George began in the bottom position, and Hugar was able to turn George and get him onto his back, leading 8-0 before taking a 13-0 lead with nearly 50 seconds left. In the third period, Hugar secured the tech fall just six seconds into the final period, 16-0, 4:54.
“Score points, that’s our motto. Every day in the practice room we’re all about scoring points, taking ground, being a bully and scoring points,” coach Harer noted. “Our guys trust in us and trust the process and do that. Evan’s a kid look at his record this year compared to last year, he had a huge turn and we’re excited for him.”
Keigan Clark ended the dual with a pin in 3:11 at 285 against Danville’s Tommy Trelease to give the Red Raiders’ the 70-6 victory.
Tuesday’s victory moves the Red Raiders to 19-0 overall and of those wins, Montgomery has scored 50 or more points 12 times.
“Everybody talks about wrestling being an individual sport; it’s not. We preach family and this is a team sport. You’re going out individually to do your job, but it’s for the team,” coach Harer said. “You take care of your job for the team. Everyone takes care of their job to get team wins.”
And those team wins keep piling up in convincing fashion as the District 4 Duals tournament draws near.
“It gives us a lot (of confidence) and it sets us up good in the bracket,” Brandt Harer said. “I think as long as we keep believing in ourselves we should be able to win districts.”
