Bucknell drops 67-62 verdict at Loyola in men’s basketball

BALTIMORE, Md. – Freshman Amon Dörries scored a career-high 26 points, but it wasn’t quite enough as a shorthanded Bucknell men’s basketball squad fell 67-62 at Loyola on Saturday afternoon at Reitz Arena. The Bison trailed for much of the game but had look at a potential tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds, and Loyola capped off a 20 for 22 day at the foul line to snap Bucknell’s six-game series winning streak.

The Bison entered the game without five injured players, and then they lost red-hot scorer Pat Curtin just 2:27 into the contest. Dörries and Achile Spadone picked up the scoring load, accounting for 44 of the team’s 62 points, and point guard Jayden Williams set a career high with eight assists without a turnover.

Bucknell got plenty of stops and generated open looks throughout the day but just could not get enough shots to drop. The Bison shot 40.7% overall and hit 6 of 27 from 3-point range, with three of those treys coming in the final five minutes as they hung around until the very end.

The first 16 minutes of the first half were played within a four-point margin either way, but Loyola opened things up with a 10-0 run late in the first half and led 31-23 at the break. The Bison opened the second half on a 12-3 run and regained the lead on Spadone’s steal and breakaway layup.

Later in the half, Spadone’s layup tied the game at 41 and then Bucknell had two good looks to retake the lead but missed an open three and a layup. Loyola responded with seven straight points to take the lead for good. Braeden Speed, who led the Greyhounds with a career-high 24 points, hit a 3-pointer to cap that run.

Bucknell’s deficit was seven at 54-47 in the final five minutes, but Dörries and Quin Berger both made 3-pointers off assists from Williams to spark an 8-2 run that made it a 1-point game at 56-55. Speed answered with a baseline jumper, and after a Dörries 3-point try rimmed out, Carter Berg-McLean scored in the lane to make it 60-55 with 1:57 to go.
