Hughesville saw two wrestlers take home first-place titles, two take third and one take fourth at the Curwensville tournament on Saturday which featured 29 teams and a lot of competition. The Spartans won the team title as well with 171 points.

Avery Earnest won the title at 142 pounds while Bella Young took home a title at 112. Bella Olsehfskie (100) and Julia Ritter (106) took third and Caroline Hicks finished fourth at 148.

Jaysa Kiss took fifth at 118 while both Ariahna Moore (124) and Madonna Charles (135) were sixth-place finishers.

“Any time we can win as a team it’s great for the program,” Hughesville coach Royce Eyer said. “We had some really tough matches today that we needed. It takes an entire team effort to win these tournaments and you need big contributions up and down the lineup, and we have been able to get that so far this season.”

At 112, Young had a hard-fought 5-3 decision win in the final over Warren’s Jenna Kophazy. Young jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a take down, but a reversal and an added point tied it up or Kophaza as the first period came to a close before Young scored two points to take the lead.

Young held on from there to win.

In the semifinals, Young earned a 10-6 decision over Clearfield’s Ashley Rougeaux and beat Pine-Richland’s Carmen Macarena’s in the quarterfinals via fall in 30 seconds.

Earnest pinned Curwensville’s Brylee London in the final in 3:25. Earnest held a 7-3 lead before she was able to secure the pinball win. In the semifinals, Earnest outlasted General McLane’s Ava Williams for a tight 5-4 decision win, securing three points in the final eight seconds of the third period for a huge win. Earnest pinned Bellefonte’s Ella Johnsonbaugh in the quarterfinals in 2:57.

“I think we are just executing the things we talk about and go over in practice. We are just looking to keep scoring points and work nonstop for six minutes,” Eyer said about Young and Earnest. “I have a great group of girls that are coachable, a great team culture and these girls want to do well and fight for it so that makes my job easier.”

In addition to taking home a title, Earnest also reached 50 career wins as a sophomore.

“She’s only a sophomore so she’s got a great shot at being the first 100-win girl in Hughesville wrestling if she keeps working and improving,” Eyer said.

Overall, Eyer was glad to see his team doing well in tournaments, not just Saturday but so far this year.

“Yes, I am happy with the success but the focus for me is on the postseason and getting each girl to their best possible form going into them,” Eyer said. “So we still have a lot to do and areas to improve on.”

Olshefskie earned an 8-0 major win over Boiling Springs’ Bryn Evans in the third-place final. Olshefskie beat Athens’ Hailey Brinkley by fall in 1:47 in the first round and earned a 31-second fall over Ava Aaron of Franklin in the second round.
