Kelcie Wagner’s 33 propels Bucktail girls past CMVT at home

KEVIN RAUCH/Special to the Sun-Gazette Emma George looks to make a pass towards the basket, after grabbing a loose ball just before it went out of bounds.

FARWELL — It was one of those nights in Farwell for the Bucktail girls basketball team where everything went their way, as the team rode 33 points from freshman Kelcie Wagner on their way to a 63-24 win over CMVT.

The fourth quarter was played under the mercy rule as the home team improved to 7-6 on the season. The loss dropped the Rams to 2-9.

All but four of Wagner’s 33 points came in the first half as the second half saw Bucktail coach Suellen Wagner try numerous combinations and rotations, even taking a peek into the future beyond this year.

“This was one of those games where we got our five that will start next year, so kind of looking at combinations of who works well underneath, who’s playing well out on top, things like that” Wagner said of her heavy subbing. “It was nice to run some plays that we’ve been trying to formulate at practice for the younger girls.”

Senior Kendall Wagner scored 23 in the win and like her younger sister, just proved too much for the Rams. She would also add eight blocks to go along with her six assists and six rebounds, coming just shy of a double-double.

KEVIN RAUCH/Special to the Sun-Gazette CMVT's Clara Guyer hauls in a defensive rebound Kaitlin Paloskey in Bucktail's 63-24 win over the Rams.

“Kelcie and Kendall were on fire, they were just hitting tonight, and our softball player Eva Sockman underneath, she’d grab a rebound and throw the ball down court, it was just one of those games for us” Wagner finished.

As dominant as the Wagner sisters were offensively, Sockman again grabbed nine rebounds to go along with her four assists and seemingly could have had more had the game called for it.

An interesting stat in the loss was the Rams hitting four field goals inside the arc, nearly matching that with three treys.

Wagner added that she expected a win on Monday when Bucktail makes a trip to Austin, a team that beat them earlier in the season, a game when Eva Sockman did not play in.
