Local roundup: Helmrich’s game-winner lifts Williamsport girls
Jaeylnn Helmrich enjoyed quite a senior moment on senior night at the Magic Dome.
Helmrich scored the game-winning layup with 3.4 seconds remaining as Williamsport fought off a furious DuBois comeback and won, 45-43. Dubois had erased a 16-point fourth quarter deficit and tied it before Makayla Cerami and Clara Fabian forced a turnover. From there, Helmrich took the ball and raced in for the game-winning score. The senior forward finished with a game-high 17 points, while Laylah Martin added 14.
North Penn-Liberty defeated Wellsboro, 44-21. Haley Litzelman had a 17-point, 16-rebound double-double with five steals and four assists while Kendall Graham scored 16 points with four rebounds. Victoria McTish had five points and 10 rebounds and Scarlett Graham added four points, three rebounds and two assists. Addy Frantz led the Green Hornets wtih nine points.
• Jaxton Frantz scored a game-high 20 points and Nixon Lamper (15 points, 13 rebounds) collected his second straight double-double as Muncy defeated Benton, 64-42 for its third straight win. Dominic Guardini added 14 points and seven rebounds. The Indians built a 37-22 halftime lead and Kyran Lisembee dealt seven assists while adding three steals. Caleb Beaver grabbed six rebounds off thebench.
Cam Cintron scored a career-high 21 points and Montoursville broke open a close game in the second half, defeating two-time defending District 4 Class AAAA champion Danville, 70-47 on the road. The Warriors (12-5) otuscored Danville, 35-18 in the second half after leading by six at the break. Elijah Eck scored 15 points, Kingston Fisher 12 and Shea Ulmer 10 in a balanced effort. Montoursville scored at least 15 points in all four quarters.
Jahki Brister, Daiton Thompson and Legend Dillard formed quite a triple threat, combining for 66 points while helping St. John Neumann rout CMVT, 74-35. Brister scored a career-high 24 points, Thompson 23 and Dillard 19 as the Knights (10-6) won their seventh straight game. Brister scored 15 points in the third quarter and Neumann built a 27-point halftime lead as Dillard scored 12 of his points.
Eleven players scored and Sullivan County put together a super first half, defeating Montgomery, 68-39. The Griffins (13-3) opened a 48-25 halftime lead and four players scored at least nine points. Lucas King scored 18 with four steals, while Tucker Blasi had 16 points, five rebounds and five steals. Cayden Smithkors scored 11 points and Colin King had nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Jaiden Moore added five boards. Parker Bennett scored a game-high 23 points for Montgomery.
Gavin Knarr scored 10 points and Jonah Heiney had nine with two steals but Southern Columbia defeated Hughesville, 72-37. Alex Schultz also scored nine points, adding five rebounds. Malachi Flowers scored seven points with five boards.
Loyalsock suffered its worst loss this season as Mifflinburg exacted a measure of revenge after the Lancers won there last month, defeating it, 50-26. The Lancers (11-5) scored just 15 points over the final three quarters. Saoj Jones scored eight for the Lancers but no other player had more than five.
Jersey Shore nearly erased a 21-point deficit against Selinsgrove, losing in the final seconds to the Seals, 66-61. Jersey Shore made it a three-point deficit with less than 20 seconds to play.
Landon Lathan had a 20-point, 10-assist double-double and Tucker Hanna scored 12 points. Breylan Guerrero added 10 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
• Warrior Run picked up a 48-24 win in boys wrestling against Central Columbia. Chase Wirnsberger pinned Ryder Bates at 127 pounds in 1:31 and at 133, Samuel mcCLoskey Jr. pinned Cole Horrax in 1:44.
The Defenders’ Reagan Milheim pinned Ethan Miller in 39 seconds at 160 and Max Wirnsberger had a 55-second pin at 172 against Logan Miller.
Bloomsburg defeated Sullivan County, 45-21. Sullivan’s Dylan Gilbert had a 7-5 decision win at 127 and at 133, Andrew Kapec pinned Shiloh Welsh in 26 seconds. However they would be the only contested wins for the Griffins as the Panthers won all bouts from 139-215 which were wrestled.
Wellsboro dropped a 54-12 dual to Northeast Bradford. Wellsboro’s Mason Abplanalp lost at 139 by fall to William Chappell in 1:25 and at 172, Northeast Bradford’s Kale Howland pinned Wyatt Kilburn late in the third period, 5:46.
Wyalusing defeated North Penn-Liberty, 60-13. Liberty’s Charles Aumick had an 8-6 decision victory at 114 over Austin Jones and at 107, Bodhi Nickerson of Liberty majored Logan Wood, 14-4. Liberty saw Bryce Pequignot win as well, doing so at 121 with a fall over Isaiah Harvey in 5:31.
• In girls wrestling competition, Wellsboro defeated Northeast Bradford by critera, 24-24. Wellsboro’s wins all came via forfeit. At 118, Wellsboro’s Kodi Passmore lost to Dariela Reyes Ramirez by fall in 45 seconds. Wellsboro’s Rosa Sguera was pinned at 124 by Mackenzie Clark in 1:02 and Kaelyn Peterson was pinned by Northeast Bradford’s Anaiah Kolesar at 130 in 1:24.
