Local roundup: Muncy beats Northwest 37-25 in girls basketball

Anna Zalonis scored 13 points and Muncy played outstanding defense as it won at Northwest, 37-25 in a rematch of last year’s Mid-Penn championship. Both teams lead their respective Mid-Penn divisions and also met in last year’s District 4 Class AA semifinals. Zalonis drained three 3-pointers and went 4 of 4 at the foul line, helping Muncy (12-1) close the game on a 14-6 run. Ava Eyer had eight points and 11 rebounds; Alexis McKeta added eight boards and Muncy allowed just six field goals.

Allyssa King was dialed in early, sinking four first quarter 3-pointers as Hughesville started strong in a 52-42 win against Mount Carmel. King drained five 3-pointers during the first half, scoring a career-high 17 points. The Spartans (12-2, 5-0 HAC-III) built a 36-21 halftime lead but had to fight off a determined Mount Carmel comeback. Freshman Casey Schultz scored six fourth quarter points to help Hughesville do so. Maddie Smith added nine points and Kendall Hamm seven.

Milton continued surging, putting together a super second half and defeating Shamokin, 48-33. The Black Panthers (7-5, 3-0 HAC-II) won their fourth straight, erasing a three-point halftime deficit and outscoring Shamokin, 35-17 in the second half. Carrie King had 12 points, six rebounds and five steals, while Jaslene Holder scored 11 points and Hayden Snyder 10. Liz Schrock pulled down eight boards and blocked six shots.

South Williamsport suffered a 46-38 loss against Benton in a Mid-Penn clash. The Mounties had a pair of double-digit scorers in Bri Borgess (11) and Ella Moore (10) while Carly Quimby added nine. Benton’s Bree Hess scored 26 points to help the Tigers secure the win.

Lewisburg lost to Central Columbia, 53-31, to fall to 5-7. The Green Dragons were led by India Walker, Teagan Osunde and Lauren Schwartz, who all scored six points. Walker had six rebounds and four steals while Schwartz had a team-high nine boards.
