Loyalsock defeats NP-Liberty in boys wrestling at home
Loyalsock was looking to close out their home slate with a big win on Thursday evening against North Penn-Liberty. The Lancers were able to do just that, winning three of the six contested bouts and taking advantage of three Mountie forfeits to win, 39-22.
“It’s great to get a win, especially with starting five freshmen in the lineup. It’s a great, up-and-coming way to end the season at home on a win. So it was good,” Loyalsock coach Chris Engler said.
With no match at 107 pounds to start the dual, North Penn-Liberty’s Bodhi Nickerson continued his breakout season after finishing as a regional qualifier a year ago, and pinned Miles Ransom-Rennicks with a cradle in the first period. Nickerson will be at 107 for the postseason, a weight at which he is ranked in the top 15 in the state by PA Power Wrestling.
“Getting down to 107 is helping him a lot. He was struggling at 114. Guys were a little stronger, and he couldn’t get away with some things. He’s got a couple things he needs to tune up. He’s a big jiu-jitsu guy, so he gets comfortable in some positions that he couldn’t get away with at 114,” North Penn-Liberty coach Craig Pequignot said. “So we’ve been working on improving that, getting the weight down, and he feels good. He had a great tournament at Mid-Winter Mayhem and placed there, and the goal is to get to states.”
At 121, returning state qualifier Bryce Pequignot received a forfeit for the Mounties to extend their lead to 12-0.
At 127, Loyalsock’s Owen Peck overcame an early deficit, shooting in on a double leg and taking Avian Whitteker feet-to-back for a third-period fall.
“I was just looking for the next takedown, and I shot myself in and got him into a double leg and put him straight to his back,” Peck said. “I knew it was over right there. I saw the opportunity, and I just took it. I saw his leg, and I knew I could trip him and send him to his back.”
Engler was pleased with Peck’s effort.
“It was great because we came out a little slow, and he kind of started picking the tempo up there,” Engler said. “It was him really getting the momentum going, as you could see. Once he put that win together, it kind of moved us along.”
At 133, Loyalsock’s Carter Brown built a 6-2 lead heading into the third-period, then turned a tilt into a fall in the final 30 seconds of the match to tie the bout up.
Four straight forfeits followed with North Penn-Liberty receiving a win at 139 and Loyalsock getting wins at 145, 152 and 160.
At 172, Loyalsock’s Curtis Lewis pinned Gavin Stubblefield in the second period. And at 189, Isaac Probst won a hard-fought 5-3 decision over Wyatt Nebeck to clinch the dual for the Lancers.
“It was great for him to push through that. He was down, and then all of a sudden he finally turned it on,” Engler said. “There were a couple mistakes we made, a little bit, but I was glad he kept his composure and wrestled three periods. That’s our motto, just go three periods and fight.”
At 215, the Mounties’ Skyler Everetts won by a 13-4 major decision over Tristian Van Fleet.
