McCormick’s defensive play helps Muncy girls cruise past rival Montgomery

MUNCY–One could look at the points Emma McCormick scores but there is a much better way one can judge her constant impact.

Just look at the points she prevents. It sure is a lot.

A relentless defender, McCormick proved it again Monday night against rival Montgomery. The senior guard made eight steals, helping the Indians win, 37-6 and remain undefeated. She added six points and two assists as the Indians (8-0, 4-0) won their 13th straight regular-season game going back to last year.

“Sometimes it goes unrecognized what some of us do and I take pride in knowing what I did well,” McCormick said. “If I’m not getting the recognition, it’s just something where I have to tell myself that I’m doing something good.”

McCormick does so much good and if one does not understand that, he or she is not paying attention.

A tireless worker, McCormick is part of a nucleus which has helped Muncy excel on both the soccer field and basketball court. It’s not a coincidence that those teams have won three district championships the past two seasons and McCormick has played a major role each time.

Last fall, McCormick was a first team all-star defender as the soccer team made history and reached the state’s Final 4 while capturing its first district title. The qualities which help her excel serve McCormick well on the court. But an even bigger common denominator is the non-stop hustle McCormick displays.

There is no stat for that, but look at how many games Muncy has won in both sports and that provides a major hint of its value.

“Emma is ready to go all the time,” Muncy coach Craig Weaver Sr. said. “She’s a good kid. She’s very coachable and a good ball player.”

McCormick is like her teammates: Selfless, hard-working and fiercely competitive. And again, all those players made big impacts as well. Ava Eyer produced her third straight double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds, Anna Zalonis scored 11 points and Rosie Zalonis added eight points and five steals before suffering a second quarter injury which Muncy is optimistic is not long term.

Whoever Weaver has on the court, he knows they will give him everything they have. McCormick highlighted that again, wasting no time setting the game’s tone. She made four first quarter steals and had three in the game’s first two minutes as Muncy quickly went up, 6-0.

McCormick scored, grabbed an offensive rebound and dealt an assist in the game’s first four minutes and Muncy led 10-0 entering the second quarter. She did not have a long preseason since Muncy’s soccer season nearly went the distance, but in many ways, that long soccer campaign has made for a seamless basketball transition.

“With soccer I keep my feet moving and that translates to basketball,” McCormick said. “It helps keep everything moving and really puts it all together.”

McCormick was at the heart of a defense which forced 37 turnovers, including 24 in the first half as Muncy built a 29-4 halftime advantage. It was the seventh time in eight games that Muncy held an opponent to fewer than 30 points.

“Defense is our specialty,” McCormick said. “We take pride in pressure on the ball and getting those steals.”

What Weaver likes as well is that Muncy continues furiously playing defense, while slowing down offensively. There’s a fine balancing act there as going 100 miles per hour often yields fantastic results when going about 50 or so works better offensively.

Muncy seems to be understanding that and consistently worked for quality shots. The Indians did not have their best shooting night, but the shots were there and that was the most important aspect.

“We’re starting to be more patient on offense. When we started the year, we were just flying and we weren’t giving the offense a chance to develop,” Weaver said. “Now, the shots are there. The big thing is when you come to play all-out like we do on defense, I’m trying to get them back it off a little bit on offense and be a little more patient and I think they did that tonight. I like where we’re at.”

Eyer generated her fourth double-double this season and continues pounding the glass. This was the third straight game in which the junior totaled at least 15 rebounds. A three-year starter, Eyer also made five steals and dealt four assists.

“Ava is always active,” Weaver said. “She will rebound for us; she will run the offense. She does a little bit of everything.”

Montgomery suffered a blow in the first quarter when leading scorer Paige Winters was lost to an injury. Still, a young team showed some promise at times, especially defensively. Miranda Staggert scored four points and Autumn Taylor grabbed five rebounds.
