Williamsport sweeps Hazleton, Mifflinburg in home tri-meet

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport's Aviya Halstead competes in the 200 Medley Relay during a high school swim tri-meet with Hazleton and Mifflinburg at Williamsport on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Williamsport didn’t have a ton of swimmers finish first on Saturday, but there were plenty of second-, third- and fourth-place finishes. And, more importantly, a good amount of time being dropped through various events.

Add in four relay victories between Williamsport’s boys and girls swimming teams, and the Millionaires had a solid day on a frigid Saturday afternoon. Williamsport swept Mifflinburg and Hazleton on both sides as the girls beat Mifflinburg, 130-24, and Hazleton, 98-81, and the boys beat Mifflinburg, 109-46, and Hazleton, 92-77.

“There was a lot of dropped times today, which surprises me but I’m very happy with it across the board with some of our top swimmers to some of our kids who are still learning and improving,” Williamsport coach Brett Johnson said. “It was a great meet.”

Among those dropped times included Williamsport’s Kyla Becker, who won the 100 fly in 1:09.48, shaving nearly three seconds off her time as she beat Kathleen Rodgers of Hazleton by three seconds. Evan Summers won the 100 fly with a time of 54.68, dropping roughly half a second. He beat Hazleton’s Morris Hunsinger V by eight seconds as he was the lone swimmer to break a minute in the race.

Summers was one of two Williamsport swimmers to win two individual events as he also claimed a victory in the 100 breast with a time of 59.12. Just like in the 100 fly, Summers was the only swimmer in the 100 breast to crack a minute. Teammate Evan Weaver took third in 1:10.08.

Williamsport’s Cooper Allmaras was a two-event winner as well as he won the 200 free and 100 back.

In the 100 back, Cooper dropped almost a second as he won in 57.65, beating Mifflinburg’s Eliott Deluca by nearly two seconds. In the 200 free, Allmaras swam a 1:56.78 to win the event, beating Hazleton’s Cason Machey by less than three seconds.

“Cooper is improving every meet in his back stroke and basically everything that he’s doing. Evan is doing what he needs to do and he’s practicing hard, they all are,” Johnson said. “He’s just looking to keep moving forward. It’s very good to have them on the team, both of them. Brady Ross as well, I think he took 100 and he didn’t win the IM, but everything he normally takes part in he’s in front. So it’s really good.”

Ross won the 100 free by swimming a 49.94, beating Hazleton’s Nicholas Pop by three seconds. In the 200 IM, Ross took second in 2:12.41 and trailed only Mifflinburg’s Malachi Moyer, who won with a time of 2:07.61.

In girls competition, Becker as one of only to girls to win an individual event. The other was Aviya Halstead, who claimed a victory in the 100 free. In that race, Halstead swam a time of 57.49 and was the only swimmer to swim a sub-minute time as teammate Miley Johnson took second in 1:01.87.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport's Ryan Saxe competes in the 100 Freestyle during a high school swim tri-meet with Hazleton and Mifflinburg at Williamsport on Saturday, Jan. 24.

“Aviya has been doing really well. She’s really stepped it p this year, she’s swimming with a purpose which I really like and her times are showing,” Johnson said. “She keeps dropping for most part every meet. Today, maybe not so much, but you’re going to have that sometimes. I’m really happy with what she’s doing. She’s swimming with a purpose and trying to lead the way.”

Halstead also took second in the 50 free in 26.04 as Lia Ochs of hazleton won in 25.91. Addison Hill of Williamsport finished third (28.45).

For Johnson, he’s happy with the times his swimmers are putting up and feels they are all reaching solid times at the right time of the season as the postseason slowly looms.

“Yeah, I think everything is where we need to be right now,” Johnson said.

Williamsport secured points thanks to winning four total relays, two on each side.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport's Miley Johnson looks to the scoreboard after competing in the 200 Medley Relay during a high school swim tri-meet with Hazleton and Mifflinburg at Williamsport on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Halstead, Annie Ross, Becker and Miley Johnson swam a 2:04.46 — dropping 1.24 seconds in the process — to claim a win in the 200 medley relay and beat Hazleton’s foursome of Mercedes DeLorenzo, Lia Ochs, Lrelei Lucas and Mariannyi Brache Minaya in a close race by just 0.24 seconds as Johnson swam a solid anchor leg to secure the win.

In the 200 free relay, it was Addison Hill, Johnson, Ross and Halstead who claimed a win in 1:52.28 and again dropped time, this time just under a second, as they beat Hazleton’s Kathleen Rodgers, Ashley Malaga, DeLorenzo and Lily Kash by seven seconds.

Williamsport’s Allmaras, Summers, Nathaniel DePrenda and Ross won the boys 200 medley relay in 1:44.15, winning by four seconds over Mifflinburg’s Eliott Deluca, Chance Moyer, Malachi Moyer and Grady Gemberling. That same foursome for Williamsport on the boys side won the 200 free relay in 1:35.60, winning the race by five seconds.

“The relays are still growing, still learning. I think we finally have what we need, other than Kiley Persun who is injured right now who would normally be in both of those girls relays,” coach Johnson said. “I think we filled in for her very well, hopefully she can get back because we’re going to need her down the stretch. But all the relays are starting to come into their own and they’re starting to look really good.”

Sarah Carothers took third in the girls 200 free in 2:22.45. Dylana Richards was a third-place finisher in the girls 200 IM in 2:46.11 while Miley Johnson took second in 2:40.41. Hazleton’s Kathleen Rodgers won in 2:36.83. Carothers took third in the 100 fly with a time of 1:19.65.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport's Payton Paules competes in the 100 Freestyle during a high school swim tri-meet with Hazleton and Mifflinburg at Williamsport on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Eli Halstead took third in the 500 free in 6:25.58 as Hazleton’s Lorelei Lucas won with a 5:57.04. Addison Hill took third in the 100 back in 1:17.01 and teammate Richards was a second-place finisher with a time of 1:16.50.

Ross was a second-place finisher in the 100 breast in 1:16.75 and Becker was third in 1:19.22. The only swimmer ahead of them was Ochs of Hazleton, who won in 1:15.31.

On the boys side, DePrenda took third in the 50 free in 25.01. Cy Haight finished third in the 500 free in 5:53.08. Weaver was a third-place finisher in the 100 breast in 1:10.08.
