Bucknell falls to Colgate in men’s basketball

LEWISBURG — The Bucknell men’s basketball team dropped a 78-59 decision to Colgate on Saturday at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison saw their two-game winning streak snapped and are now 8-17 overall and 5-7 in the Patriot League, while the second-place Raiders improved to 15-10 and 9-3 in conference play. Amon Dörries scored a game-high 25 points for Bucknell, his third straight 20-plus point performance, and Achile Spadone added 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Bison struggled with their shooting, making only 6 of 23 field goal attempts (.261) in the first half and 18 of 55 (.327) for the contest. Bucknell missed its first 16 3-point attempts before finishing 3-for-25. The Raiders shot 38.2 percent in the half but 51.7 percent in the second, and they finished at 44.4 percent with eight treys in 24 attempts.

Andrew Alekseyenko scored a team high 16 points for Colgate, leading four players in double figures. Jalen Cox, who had a triple-double against Bucknell last month, had 14 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists. Josh Ahayere tallied 15 points and Sam Wright finished with 14.

Dorries and Spadone carried much of the scoring load for the Bison, combining for 41 of the team’s 59 points and 15 of their 18 field goals. Dörries, who has garnered the last two Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors, topped the 20-point mark for the sixth time this season, finishing 9-for-15 from the field, 1-for-3 from the arc, and 6-for-8 from the foul line.

Colgate led right from the game’s very first possession, as Alekseyenko opened the scoring with a 3-pointer. The Raiders hit their first three from downtown on the way to an early 11-2 lead. Later in the half, a 14-5 run with eight of their points coming from the foul line led to a 29-12 advantage.

Down 39-23 at the half and 63-44 at the eight-minute mark, Bucknell got the crow going with back-to-back 3-pointers from Pat Curtin and Dörries to pull within 13 at 63-50. But Colgate answered with a second-chance 3-pointer from Ben Tweedy, igniting an 8-2 spurt that pushed the gap right back to 19.
